I manage a small team (don't want to out myself and have name changed)
I work part time and lack assertiveness skills Sad resulting in two unprofessional team members taking the pi**

Not going into a huge amount of detail but basically they are discussing personal issues, gossiping about other staff in work time and though they do their job need a lot of prompting which is draining & taking long breaks.
Management turn a blind eye but I feel so angry that they do this. I am hoping to move teams. But this problem follows me around. I do have low self esteem and I know I need help. I am highly qualified and a bit too 'nice'. Any advice appreciated.

Just to explain - it's not just an issue in my own area but others dont seem to care.

Management turn a blind eye? Including you?

This is on you to deal with. Imagine they are toddlers, set some bloody boundaries and pull them up every time they push them.

bunglebee · 13/05/2021 22:47

You are management! Their management, specifically!

Pull them up or give up your manager role. It's literally your job. It's basic.

You have to pick them up on the gossiping at the time. Also set clear timescales for them to do their work.

Well, this may sound harsh, but if you accepted a job with managerial responsibility, then you need to get your arse in gear and manage your team. If you're not capable of doing that, then you need to step back.

Of course - there are ways to try and deal with this - for example, ask your boss for training in assertiveness or managerial skills.

“Stop gossiping and get on with your work.”

I didn't take on the management. The job is a profession that I have always done. These staff were taken on as they are cheaper than recruiting professionals if that makes sense.

But I will take a few days off and get tougher.
