School data protection breach

Advise welcome.
I received an email from the school admitting they emailed several parents with my child's information including any SEN status, any identified area or diagnosis of SEND in an initialed format and any associated funding relating to my child was shared via the school email address with a group of ten parents 2 days ago. The school have let us down on a couple of occasions with regards to my child. I suspected he had dyslexia and was constantly told it wasn't that he couldn't do the work it was due to him being lazy. I said to my DH at the time imagine if you tried your best and was constantly told it's not good enough and you can do better.
I feel so upset and the more I think about it the more upset I get. I have requested to see what the information is.
I understand that people make mistakes but this to me is massive. I really don't know what to do about it or where to go from here. Please help, thank you.

I would have expected a phone call at the very least, not an email! How on earth has that happened? I'd be livid! The school could be fined a lot of money, in fact it's a personal find for the person responsible under new GRPR guidelines. This is a serious breach. I'd be asking what they are going to do about it. They have a duty to report it too, not just to you.

Was it you who posted about whether to report an email to the head? If so an email would logically follow up your query. Out of the blue less so. It should be reported to ICO too.

This is awful, it shouldn't have happened. You deserve a proper apology.

If it happened to me I would:

  • email the head and ask how it happened and what will be done to ensure it can never happen again
  • ask to know exactly what was released
  • phone the ICO to discuss what happened ico.org.uk/global/contact-us/ and make a complaint

Thanks for both of your responses it really helps to know I'm not over reacting with how I feel. LIZS- no it wasn't me about whether to report an email. It does sound like it could have been the email sent.
