Absolutely freaking out please help

I have had some minor gynae symptoms recently (clear smear, clear colposcopy) so was sent for a transvaginal ultrasound today to make sure all was OK with my ovaries. When I have had these before the technician has usually said oh the results will go to your doctor but it all looks OK. Today she just said the results will go to your doctor in a week. Now I am panicking she saw something. I took pictures of the images on screen and have fallen into a black hole googling. There is a white mass which I am convinced must be a tumour along with other things I have convinced myself are sinister.

I'm being utterly ridiculous I know but I am completely panicking.

See under 'supporting you'. I called them about a different type of cancer & they were brilliant. You can speak to a nurse. Just tell them what you're worried about. Good luck.

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:12

That isn't helpful it has just made me freak out more tbh. I wanted people to say those scans are impossible to decipher yourself and not to worry 😅

Can you upload them?

Could it be a cyst on the ovary maybe?

Lostinacloud · 13/05/2021 13:16

Maybe it was just the technician’s style? I had an ultrasound of my liver once to check a lump and the technician didn’t say a word throughout and then said he’d send the results to my GP. Absolutely nothing was wrong so hopefully that will be the same case for you.

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:18

Bit of a crap picture I'm afraid. I'm sure there were more images but these were the ones left on screen at the end.

Could be different technician, different way of expressing herself?

If you are in a panic these results are often uploaded to the spine pretty quickly (I work in NHS admin) Could try calling GP on Monday to see if they came through or just send the GP the pics?

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:19

To me they look like all the Google images of abnormal masses.

readingismycardio · 13/05/2021 13:20

I think it could be cysts?

jojogoesbust · 13/05/2021 13:20

Step away from Google!

mynameiscalypso · 13/05/2021 13:21

Honestly, if she saw something, she wouldn't have said they'll go to the doctor in a week. They would have done something there and then and followed up with you immediately. I can totally understand why you're freaking out but I really don't think you have any need to - plus if my experience in pregnancy was anything to go by, ultrasound scans are almost impossible to decipher if you're not trained. The number of times I just had to nod when a technician pointed out something to me because it all just looked like a blob.

HollowTalk · 13/05/2021 13:22

OK. Are you a medic? Have you undergone years and years of training in how to interpret scans?

In fact, what's the highest level you've achieved in science in school/university and did that involve reading and interpreting scans of internal organs?

Ylvamoon · 13/05/2021 13:22

Ok - sit down and deep breath!

This could be absolutely anything. So without a professional opinion, you will be none the wiser.

Now step away from the Internet and MN and look forward to the weekend!

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:27

No. I'm not a medic. I have zero scientific knowledge. It is pathetic. I wasn't even referred for this scan urgently - I had a colposcopy in early March which was totally normal. The consultant wasn't remotely concerned but said she would refer me for a pelvic scan just to cover all bases. Since then I haven't even had any symptoms and I wasn't expecting to come out of today feeling worried.

Of course those scans are impossible to decipher if you're not trained. It looks like the Starship Enterprise is about to enter a hostile galaxy.

Seriously, you're being silly!

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:28

It looks like the Starship Enterprise is about to enter a hostile galaxy

I think I've been staring at various images on Google for the past 3 hours and I genuinely can't see the remotest difference between a benign cyst and a malignant tumour. They look exactly the same to me.

WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead · 13/05/2021 13:29

I caught a glimpse of my mammogram image and it looked exactly like the cancerous examples on Google. The radiographer was equally as "non-reassuring" yours. All was fine! Hope you get the all clear soon.

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:31

I'm only 32 and have none of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. I was originally referred for post coital bleeding, hence the colposcopy.

I've had no bloating, no weight loss, no fatigue, zilch.

OP posts:
Strawberrysaxifrage · 13/05/2021 13:32

I've no idea whether anything was spotted on the scans, but it could be that she's just being more cautious overall and doesn't want to comment on scan without a Dr's opinion? Could be a change in policy, that is to say she might have been told 'no advising patients on the outcome until a doctor has seen and signed off', potentially if a patient was told theirs looked ok and it wasn't.

I know you must be worried but would try not to read much into her turn of phrase as she's still following the same process as before.

Atla · 13/05/2021 13:33

If it was bad news you wouldn't be waiting a week to find out, you would be referred there and then to a SpReg or consultant and they would be speaking to you straight away, or asap.

I know it's easy for me to say, but try not to worry. Flowers

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:33

She didn't seem concerned or anything, just matter of factly informed me I'd get the results in a week.

OP posts:
Atla · 13/05/2021 13:34

Also, the technicians will always say nothing until they get the official report signed off.

minipie · 13/05/2021 13:35

So you’re panicking just because she didn’t say it looks ok?

Honestly that is normal IME. The technicians don’t want to commit themselves to saying anything even if it looks fine to them, just in case the dr sees something on review.

Also agree that if she did think there was an issue; you’d be on a shorter timescale.

Imreaaaaady · 13/05/2021 13:36

Just wait for your results! Worrying won't change the outcome.

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:39

I know I'm being stupid.
