Absolutely freaking out please help

I have had some minor gynae symptoms recently (clear smear, clear colposcopy) so was sent for a transvaginal ultrasound today to make sure all was OK with my ovaries. When I have had these before the technician has usually said oh the results will go to your doctor but it all looks OK. Today she just said the results will go to your doctor in a week. Now I am panicking she saw something. I took pictures of the images on screen and have fallen into a black hole googling. There is a white mass which I am convinced must be a tumour along with other things I have convinced myself are sinister.

I'm being utterly ridiculous I know but I am completely panicking.

@Thefourbells

That isn't helpful it has just made me freak out more tbh. I wanted people to say those scans are impossible to decipher yourself and not to worry 😅
I know, sorry. I just wanted to show you that they deal with ovarian cancer. Maybe I should've linked to a different page.

Honestly, their phone line was superb. I told them my problem & had a nurse who specialised in exactly what my concern was about (a particular procedure) call me back, talk me through it & answer all my questions.

If it would help to have a medical professional tell you those scans are impossible to decipher yourself, don't worry, then go for it.

Doghead · 13/05/2021 13:41

Nobody in here can stop you freaking out. I'm afraid you'll just have to wait.

Redskyyy · 13/05/2021 13:41

Don’t panic!!! I get exactly the same after things like this (I had a breast ultrasound and biopsy and was convinced it was bad news when the lady doing it said something similar).
Remember, they NEED a doctor to review. They don’t want to say either way because they are not trained to do so. If it looked bad I highly doubt you would be waiting a week for results.

I do remember seeing all sorts of weird and wonderful things in there while I was pregnant!

@Atla

If it was bad news you wouldn't be waiting a week to find out, you would be referred there and then to a SpReg or consultant and they would be speaking to you straight away, or asap.

I know it's easy for me to say, but try not to worry. Flowers

This is what happened to me: the ultrasound was just the first step & they said if it looked dodgy the consultant would be called in to do other tests - which he was.
ShirleyPhallus · 13/05/2021 13:45

I would think again about having posted that image OP, as all sorts of weirdos lurk here and the last thing you need is someone telling you you have a pair of forceps left inside you or something

I second the idea to ring the GP on Monday and see if you can make an earlier appointment. I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about Flowers

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:48

I definitely don't have forceps in there haha

I do have an iud, which I can clearly see.

It could just be a technician who isn't a people person let's say. The by the book is, "sent to your dr" it's just experienced technicians try to put you at ease, and not sure they are actually meant to

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 13:57

I think it only worried me as I've had two of these scans before (in 2018 and 2016) and both times the technician gave me the "it looks fine but the doctor will look at it anyway" schpiel.

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 14:02

Anyway thank you all for being lovely Flowers

FOJN · 13/05/2021 14:08

The dimensions and volume values that are on the screen look to be within normal limits.

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 14:09

Yes, that much Google told me but I was worrying more about the weird lumpy looking things.

Shannith · 13/05/2021 14:13

OP - it's probably a cyst. Especially given your age and lack of other symptoms. And that it's going over to your GP "in a week" rather than an urgent referral

Really. I'm not a medic either.

I do have a load of cysts and I've been told many times by medical staff that it's really very common.

Shannith · 13/05/2021 14:18

It I know what it's like to freak out. Do the scanners look worried/not worried/did it take too long/was it too quick? They looked at me funny. What does it mean???

In my head it be the worst case scenario whatever they did other than getting out bunting and proclaiming mine the best examples of ovaries they have ever seen.

That was my thought process. Totally normal. As are my ovaries and their cysts. Never did hear if they are excellent examples of the genre but I like to think they are.

babbaloushka · 13/05/2021 14:35

Looks like it could be a cyst but I'm not a specialist. Don't worry OP, if they're concerned you'll hear from them sooner.

PattyPan · 13/05/2021 14:44

It’s probably a cyst - they’re very common and usually don’t cause problems or need intervention. I have loads because I have PCOS and would never have known if I hadn’t been for a scan!

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 14:51

There's definitely something there, regardless.

OP posts:
CornedBeef451 · 13/05/2021 14:52

If there was a problem you'd hear within 24 hours. If they can wait a week then you're fine!

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 14:53

Oh really, even at the weekend?

OP posts:
Ethelfromnumber73 · 13/05/2021 14:53

I've had lots of ovarian scans due to IVF. They can look different depending on loads of factors including where you are in your cycle. Try not to worry, I've had tests/scans etc where the tech has given me the result and ones where they haven't. It has never correlated with the findings

netstaller · 13/05/2021 14:55

If it was anything serious she'd tell you there and then or refer you for an urgent referral. You're over thinking it, it's probably nothing

Thefourbells · 13/05/2021 15:18

Thank you, I've calmed a tiny bit now. Have chocolate cookies baking in the oven.

Doctors don’t review sonographers’ gynae scans. They write the report at the end of the scan.

Aunthe · 13/05/2021 19:20

OP I was just like this three weeks ago. Minus the pictures. I had had transvaginal scan few years ago and the sonographer doing the scan said there and then all was ok. Three weeks ago, exact same sonographer (clinic within local small cottage hospital) and she said, you'll get the results in a week when I've had a chance to look at them (sonographer is qualified to write report). That worried me so as asked if everything was ok? She repeated, I'd get then in a week. That really worried me. I got results in a week. Nothing wrong, nothing to report whatsoever. Maybe just how things were for her that day, or there was a queue and no chance to chat.

It's really hard I know but step away from Dr Google.

Cornishandproudofit · 13/05/2021 19:25

Honestly you would NOT be waiting a week for results if there was something wrong.

I know 2 people who have had cancer. Both were called the same day with bad scan results.

They really don’t hang around with this sort of thing if there is a concern
