Anyone remember these jelly diamonds put on top of butterfly cakes?? I never see them used anymore and yet the were the finishing touch to a home bake. I'd love a nostalgic 80s thread..

Ah yes I remember those but I didn't like them.

I always remember little ice lollies that must have just been frozen juice cartons as they were the same shape (wider at the bottom than the top). They only cost about 3p.

LagneyandCasey · 09/05/2021 22:45

I remember jelly diamonds and the rock hard silver balls. A birthday party wasn't complete without them.

mrsmacmc · 09/05/2021 22:48

Yes! I preferred the orange and lemon slices though ❤️

Did they ever go away? My children think they are a totally normal thing to put on cakes or as a topping for ice cream sometimes. I actually didn't realise they were a specifically 80s thing.
Hellocatshome · 09/05/2021 22:53

Yes! We weren't allowed sweets very often so me and my brother used to steal these out of the kitchen cupboard along with the silver balls.

LEMtheoriginal · 09/05/2021 22:59

It has always perplexed me how those silver balls were actually allowed as a food stuff for kids. Rock hard

Us too, along with the glacé cherries and the orange & lemon slices. Every birthday cake worth it's salt in the 80s featured at least one of these (although I never liked the silver balls - they had a weird metallic taste).
Graphista · 09/05/2021 23:06

Yes I remember don't think they ever went away?

Also silver balls and sugar roses

musicalfrog · 09/05/2021 23:08

Round chocolate mousses from the freezer, in plastic pots with cardboard lids which had a tab on the side. What a treat!

Were they the humbug shaped ones? We called them jubblies and were the perfect thing for a hot day. Lasted for hours too.
SavingsQuestions · 09/05/2021 23:21

There was weird green stuff you could sort of slice to make stems for flowers too? I want to say Angelica (but now Imsinging hamilton..). We used ti have sugar flowers and this green stuff and glacé cherries. But only ever a few at a time... not like my kids!

dancinfeet · 09/05/2021 23:27

@IFiredUpTheQuattro you can still buy Jubblies, Iceland and Farmfoods sell them .

mawbroon · 09/05/2021 23:28

Yes! I was also going to say angelica.
And making peppermint creams from icing sugar and peppermint essence

TheChippendenSpook · 10/05/2021 00:03

Quattro

They didn't come with a wrapper. It was just like someone had opened a round carton of juice, peeled the lid off, stuck a lolly stick in it and when it was frozen, pulled the plastic carton away.

Most odd but very delicious!

Piemam · 10/05/2021 00:24

@LagneyandCasey, I recently celebrated my birthday with a cake, which I iced and decorated with those silver balls! They're not so hard anymore though, makes me wonder if someone lost a tooth and then the manufacturers had to reformulate them...

MsOgyny · 10/05/2021 00:33

Angelica is well nigh impossible to find these days, but such is my dedication to it that I spend a fortune buying it online Grin

After seeing this thread, I'm going to make 80s themed cupcakes this week. Excellent! Thank you all!

Super mousse? I loved the strawberry ones. I think you were supposed to thaw them out but we ate them frozen Smile
musicalfrog · 10/05/2021 18:40

Possibly @LagneyandCasey I do remember strawberry ones too. Such a treat when Mum sent me out to the garage for one of those!!

SavingsQuestions · 10/05/2021 19:03

I have cola jubblies in my freezer from asda at the moment! I didn't have them first time round but love them!
