Anyone else got/had anosmia/ parosmia after several months?

Hi all,

I have had long covid including anosmia, for about 7 months now. I can detect sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami but no distinction between those and parosmia started some months ago. If there is a strong taste or smell, I get an artificial, burnt smell or taste. It's not identical and varies between different tastes or smells but there is no correspondence to the actual smell. I have been trying smell training but not much is changing.

Is anyone in the same or a similar position? Did anyone have it this long and their taste and smell come back?

I know I could have had covid a lot worse, it's just not the nicest feeling wondering whether I will ever enjoy food properly or smell certain things like cut grass again!

It would be great to know others' experiences as I feel like I'm quite alone, nobody I know has had it this long .

Mine isn’t as bad as yours but I did contact my GP because it’s driving me crackers. They suggested a steroid nasal spray (beconase) everyday for a couple of months. I am actually finding it’s making a difference.

Yes, I’ve had it since December. Completely lost my taste and smell when I had Covid and it did return a bit before getting worse again six weeks or so ago and now I get that strange artificial taste and smell for lots of things. Wine, chocolate, coffee just aren’t nice anymore 🙁 Haven’t been to the GP as assumed that they can’t do much but maybe I should.

So sorry to hear you both have it still. You're right, user I still associate those those things with being a treat but the taste is quite unpleasant! Milo I had read varying advice about steroid spray but think I will ask the GP about giving it a go.

Really hope you're both better soon, it's no fun Flowers

I was also sent for blood tests for liver and kidney function because technically it is long COVID so they wanted to check there was nothing more going on. All came back clear.
I would recommend the nasal spray, my friend had COVID after me and she was suffering too and she’s seen an improvement as well after using it.
