Year six disco

Hello!

School is going to do its best to put on a year six disco in early July (no guarantees, COVID restrictions permitting).

My DD has asked if she can have something new to wear for it, I’ve said yes fine, but am now wondering what constitutes disco wear for 10 and 11 year olds?!

Any advice gratefully received. If left to my own devices I’d send her in a colourful summer dress, likely something from Boden. I fear this is potentially a country mile from what is acceptable, and would really value any input!!

My kids wore all
Sorts to school discos.... jump suit, skirt and top, sparkly dress. For her year 6 my daughter wore a navy dress with sparkly straps and silver converse.

Why don't you take her out to primary and see what she likes then give her a couple of choices that you have approved first!

For my year 6 disco I wore Bermuda shorts and a snoopy T-shirt.....don't let her wear that 🤣

Take her shopping she will enjoy that x

I dressed as Sherlock Holmes for mine. Including a pipe. Real. Borrowed from grandad.

Can you take your DD shopping and let her choose (within reason)? My DD is a bit older, she would choose something from H&M or Zara or Primark. Boden a bit babyish I expect - sorry!

Well, all the girls in my DC's class ( yr6) wear River Island. They're like a bloody advert for the shop.
T-shirts, leggings or skirts- I don't think it matters- so long as it's from River Island it will be worthyHmm.

JoyOrbison · 09/05/2021 20:29

All my dds cohort wore jeans and body com style tops, makeup and earrings. Dd wore a gothic lacy dress and face lace style stickers Grin

AmberRoseGold · 09/05/2021 20:31

River island, hollister, Jack wills, urban outfitters or H&M.. My 11yo has just cleared out all of her pretty dresses. And anything with sequins. Will wear Oilily, Desigual, Gap with out of school friends but not school friends. I would see if you can choose anything that she can wear all summer. DD and all her friends like the cut off denim dungaree shorts look.

Anything from New Look is probably safe!!

MadelaineMaxwell · 09/05/2021 20:35

Whatever she wants to wear. At our school there was a full range of outfits, from leggings and hoodies, jogging a and tops, sparkly dresses skirts to summer Boden type dresses. Let her choose what she’s comfortable wearing.

MadelaineMaxwell · 09/05/2021 20:36

*keg gongs and tops

Basilandparsleyandmint · 09/05/2021 20:36

My Dd is y6 and boden, joules , next are all totally uncool apparently. It’s all about a website called shien, new look. Some of the clothes are awful ! So we are trying to find a compromise 😆

MadelaineMaxwell · 09/05/2021 20:36

Ffs 🤦🏻‍♀️ *jeggings and tops

NerrSnerr · 09/05/2021 20:43

I would wait until nearer the time and let her choose. She'll be able to see what her friends are wearing if she wants some inspiration from them (or she may of course know exactly what she wants)

Sleepingdogs12 · 09/05/2021 20:45

Doesn't she know what she'd like to wear?

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 09/05/2021 20:46

My DD and her best friends wanted to wear party dresses. She had a pale blue and gold Lacy one from H&M. We went shopping and other outfits she liked were a velvet shorts play suit and a sequinned top with black shorts.

There was quite a split though and many girls just went casual in denim shorts/ dungarees or leggings and a top.

vinoandbrie · 09/05/2021 21:33

Thank you for all this, really great suggestions!

Re ‘doesn’t she know what she’d like to wear?’ they've not really been able to get together and socialise for a long time, and what’s fashionable or popular has rather passed us all by for a year or so 😂

She was saying ‘oh it doesn’t matter, I don’t need anything new just to wear once, and it may not happen anyway’ and I was telling her that I would hope she’d wear the outfit a lot more than once, and that it would be fun to have something special / new for the disco. Don’t know quite what she had in mind that was so out there that it could only be worn for one occasion 🤣

We need to hit the shops for sure!

Could you check with the other mums? I found it helpful to have some coordination with DD friendship group. In fact for our DD first disco girls (age 13) they got dressed in advance at one of the girls house, and getting ready so much more fun than the event itself.
