How do you budget/plan for your child's birthday presents

Just curious and I can't ask anyone irl. I have two very little ones (3 and 1) who thanks to covid haven't had a brithday party or anything yet (so no need to budget for one) neither have been to nursery either so I'm not sure what the 'norm' to spend/number of presents to buy is. My eldest will be four later this year and I would like to buy him his first bike. I also have a playmobil boat I brought for a steal for £10 I know he will LOVE (from £35!) and I wanted to get him a small lego set as he has none. I aim to spend

In my opinion there is no right or wrong as long as you keep your head in the game, get presents your child may enjoy and not just to create a mountain.

DD doesn't have a lot of families, just grandparents who give one present, they do ask and we normally give them a small list with things up to £20. So all other presents come from us and I prefer buying things I knew DD will enjoy playing with and in some years we had a total of less than £100, in others more. When she was younger I also got lots second hand like her first bike, puzzles, books, first games. Her Brio train set was also second hand. They have no idea and often things are hardly used.

I don't make a difference between Christmas and birthdays though. Same logic applies to both occassions.

When she started having parties she normally got small gifts from her friends.

DH usually gets a bonus from work early in the year. We put away enough for both children's birthday and Christmas presents and enough for a small party. Both boys are end of the year born so expensive time of the year so we like to know the money is put away ready. A few years DH hasn't got as much of a bonus so we've saved as much as we can in the run up.

Thanks @ALevelhelp that sounds like a good idea
