I've got more money than I've ever had in my life!

Due to lockdown, no holidays, no restaurants, no going out etc I have managed to save and I now have more money than I have ever had in savings.... £16k. Small fish to some and a lot to many but I cannot begin to tell you how secure and happy I feel that I've got a little nest-egg... I've been a single parent (DS now an adult) and lived hand to mouth and have struggled in the past. So its nice to have a buffer...

Well done. Keep it up!

AdoraBell · 09/05/2021 17:21

Bloody well done 👍 keep saving.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 09/05/2021 17:23

Well done op.
I had to use mine to get through the pandemic but I was lucky to have that safety net.
It's the peace of mind it brings.

IwantYouBack · 09/05/2021 17:25

That's brilliant!! Keep saving

Fnib · 09/05/2021 17:26

Well done!!

hemhem · 09/05/2021 17:26

Well done, great habit to have started

Bonitalazenia · 09/05/2021 17:36

Yes it’s a great feeling having some security and savings and actually I think the saving bug continues even when you can start spending again because actually frittering money just doesn’t give you the buzz it use to. In my experience anyway

Dodeee · 09/05/2021 17:38

Amazing! My husband lost his job in lockdown and we struggled but actually didn’t struggle as much as I thought we would and that’s because we spent a lot less money. The amount we saved in fuel for car alone was ridiculous! Unfortunately we haven’t saved anything as we used every penny to pay bills, mortgage and buy food. But I can totally see how people who kept their jobs have been able to save.

fairynick · 09/05/2021 17:43

I have managed to save £3k and also feel like a millionaire! Been very lucky during this pandemic to have not been affected financially and am extremely grateful.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 09/05/2021 17:45

Congrats OP, it is a nice feeling.

I have also been able to save for the first time in years, not as much as you have (€700). I had been in debt for years, so it's such a relief.

As pp said you start to get the saving bug, and I'm aiming to save €2000 by the end of the year.
Although the trade off is we have had no life or fun for the last few months Grin

FairyDust123456 · 09/05/2021 17:47

Amazing! It really does help to feel secure, keep going!

Bonitalazenia · 09/05/2021 17:48

I'm lucky in that I'm a nurse and I've worked consistently and picked up extra shifts throughout Covid (except for when I had it). I can now drop my hours and its doing wonders for my health and well-being! For the first time in ages I can say I love my life!

That's great! Lucky you enjoy it! I'm happy for all the people that have managed to benefit in some way from this shitty pandemic

Unfortunately I have less than I have ever had in my life and it sucks!!

changeruset2748 · 09/05/2021 17:53

Sounds like it's time for a holiday Grin

Thisgirlcando · 09/05/2021 17:53

I’ve got £1200 and it’s so nice knowing I have it for an emergency

Reinventinganna · 09/05/2021 18:05

Well done. It’s a good feeling.

I’m the same (and also a nurse). I was able to do it because I had to live in isolation away from my family throughout the first lockdown and worked to cover shifts of colleagues that were ill but also to keep me from crumbling without my family.

You will get posters along in a minute telling you how selfish you are as people are starving and they’ve lost their jobs/houses/horses! I give it ten minutes!

Bexily · 09/05/2021 18:05

We've managed to get out of debt (other than the mortgage) for the first time in 12 years. We're now saving what we were paying for our loan, it's really nice to finally have some savings behind us.

clpsmum · 09/05/2021 18:06

If people tells you that you selfish as @Reinventinganna suggests just tell them to fuck off!!!

Heathcliff27 · 09/05/2021 18:07

It's a great feeling. We've managed to save a bit as well, no where near as much as you but still really pleased. I've been working part time for years but have a new full time job starting next week so am determined that the extra wages will be going straight into savings.

Figgygal · 09/05/2021 18:07

Well done you!!
I’ve got a bit of a buffer built up and can see if I’d not had a temporary pay cut and dh furloughed for months it could have been even better

mooonstone · 09/05/2021 18:08

Congrats! I feel like this too! I moved to London at 18 and have rented here ever since, so have never really been able to save much.

Recently got a new job and I have £1800 left over each month after my rent and all living costs are paid for. I’m still early 20s too. It feels amazing considering I used to live in my overdraft at uni!

RestUp · 09/05/2021 18:09

Good for you ! Keep it up. It really does feel amazing knowing you can replace a washing machine etc.

Feels very safe.

zippyswife · 09/05/2021 18:10

That's brilliant. Good for you.

Thewiseoneincognito · 09/05/2021 18:11

Well done OP! Keep it up, you soon get used to the feeling of not having to worry about money and whilst it’s not a ‘life’ changing amount it’s certainly a ‘way of life’ changing amount. £16k is a huge amount to many people, you’re on a roll and I bet you hit £20k sooner than you think.

It’s very relative but I believe in the saying money attracts money, it gets easier to save once you’re at this point.
