I've got more money than I've ever had in my life!

Due to lockdown, no holidays, no restaurants, no going out etc I have managed to save and I now have more money than I have ever had in savings.... £16k. Small fish to some and a lot to many but I cannot begin to tell you how secure and happy I feel that I've got a little nest-egg... I've been a single parent (DS now an adult) and lived hand to mouth and have struggled in the past. So its nice to have a buffer...

Very well done, it is such a lovely feeling knowing that there is a security blanket of cash there. Also, I have found that a lot of things I used to do, like meeting friends for coffee and dropping the best part of a tenner on coffee and meh cake, just doesn't appeal anymore, we now meet in each other's gardens now for home made coffee or a glass of wine. Shopping for clothes that we don't really need has stopped too, I don't work now, but used to spend a small fortune on lunchtime sandwich and such because I was too lazy to make my own. It all adds up as you have found! Well done you x

Me too!
I’ve just had a new bathroom put in, I’ve been planning and saving for nearly 10 years for it.
My extra shifts and lock down has meant that I’ve saved what I needed and got it done without being completely wiped out.

So chuffed.
I keep going and looking at it.

@mooonstone

Congrats! I feel like this too! I moved to London at 18 and have rented here ever since, so have never really been able to save much.

Recently got a new job and I have £1800 left over each month after my rent and all living costs are paid for. I’m still early 20s too. It feels amazing considering I used to live in my overdraft at uni!

Jesus Christ. How much are you earning?

Well done everyone saving. It makes such a difference to mental well being and hoping people in difficult situations feel some easing soon.

Same here. We have saved enough to be able to sell our flat and buy a 4 bed house in the same area. Of course the mortgage will be higher, but it's something we could never have contemplated before the pandemic.

Managed to get to a couple of K for the first time in my life. Just heard dh is losing his job tho so back to square one.

FinallyFluid · 28/08/2021 16:28

DH got paid on the 26th, on the 1st, his first ever pension payment will drop into his bank account, we are going to be on double income for a year, Grin it will all be getting saved.

I love the buzz that savings give you.

That's amazing OP well done :)
We managed to pay off a £9k credit card debt that we'd had for years over lockdown. Shows how much money we were unusually wasting on socialising and buying things on lunch breaks etc. As well as the cost of commuting of course which was an unavoidable expense. It really opened our eyes and has made us change our spending habits for good.

Well done OP. Loved reading that you’re loving life 💕

Well done Bonitalazenia you should feel really proud of yourself. A lovely thread to read for a change.

BigGooseyLucy · 28/08/2021 17:59

How amazing !

@ThewaterlilliesofGiverny

Well done!

A word of warning! Don’t go telling your wider circle of friends/ distant family about it - there will be one who will ask for a “loan” and not pay it back.

Keep it for your rainy day not for someone else to piss up the wall.

This!

Well done. :) We have saved a little but not that amount. I agree that the savings bug hits. Last week i realised I was just frittering money away on utter shite and have cancelled some things like subscriptions I do not use. I also added up some food and drink that we just mindlessly consume and have stopped that. I added it up over a month and it was about a tenner a day just spent on crap. I have now set up a standing order from current to savings account of a fiver a day and find that it makes the most insane amount of differnece- considering it is always 'just a bottle of wine' or 'just some crisps and a pint at the pib'.

*realised last month, not last week.
