I've got more money than I've ever had in my life!

Due to lockdown, no holidays, no restaurants, no going out etc I have managed to save and I now have more money than I have ever had in savings.... £16k. Small fish to some and a lot to many but I cannot begin to tell you how secure and happy I feel that I've got a little nest-egg... I've been a single parent (DS now an adult) and lived hand to mouth and have struggled in the past. So its nice to have a buffer...

Well done! I had something similar as DD’s nursery closed so we didn’t have the cost of childcare. It wasn’t much consolation at the time because we were stressed from juggling, but now I’m properly financially recovered for the first time since she was born!

CrazylazyJane · 09/05/2021 18:27

Amazing! You should be chuffed and I can totally see how freeing it must feel to know you've got a 'shit buffer'. Bloody amazing. Well done.

Vanfanran · 09/05/2021 18:34

Brilliant OP! having a savings buffer is such a relief. I'm slowly adding to mine, I've worked throughout but for the first time ever am able to wfh for a few days per week, and the savings for fuel and childcare has made a lot of difference to typical outgoings. Really hope I can keep it up

Bonitalazenia · 09/05/2021 18:35

Wow! Thanks for all the lovely replies!x

Well done. Great feeling. I cleared debt and its a wonderful feeling except mortgage lol

TillyTopper · 09/05/2021 18:44

Well done OP! We've also managed to save during the pandemic - no commute, no coffees/lunches at work, no restaurants, far fewer office clothes etc. I'm am going to make sure I keep a lot of this up when I return to the office. I'll still have my commute costs, but I intend to not buy coffees, take my own lunch and be more frugal with clothes!

Di11y · 09/05/2021 19:13

DD turned 3 and got free hours last sept, we went down to 1 car with minimal petrol costs and dd1 doesn't need breakfast club as both WFH. We're up £800/month!

NothingIsWrong · 09/05/2021 19:16

Well done! We were in the shit initially, and had to use savings but we have now caught them up again. It's such a nice feeling to know that we could do that. I now have a new job earning more money, because my employer decided it was WFH for ever and I didn't want that. I would never have pushed myself to get a new job, and I'm loving it, so I suppose I have Covid to thank for that.

Well done! Having a nest egg no matter how small is an incredible feeling and gives you confidence and peace!

Woodlandbelle · 09/05/2021 19:29

Thats amazing and a huge relief for you
Ps I think nurses are amazing Flowers
It's good to have a bit of security.

pontiouspilates · 09/05/2021 19:46

That's great OP, enjoy the feeling!

TheChosenTwo · 09/05/2021 19:51

Well done OP, it’s a nice feeling knowing there’s money in reserve Flowers

Bramblebutter · 09/05/2021 19:56

Well done! Haven't RTFT - but I suggest Premium Bonds right now while instrest rates are low. And treat yo self of course

ThewaterlilliesofGiverny · 09/05/2021 20:29

Well done!

A word of warning! Don’t go telling your wider circle of friends/ distant family about it - there will be one who will ask for a “loan” and not pay it back.

Keep it for your rainy day not for someone else to piss up the wall.

NakedBanana · 09/05/2021 20:39

@Bonitalazenia

I'm lucky in that I'm a nurse and I've worked consistently and picked up extra shifts throughout Covid (except for when I had it). I can now drop my hours and its doing wonders for my health and well-being! For the first time in ages I can say I love my life!
What a brilliant. thread OP! Well done :)

I have saved £1.5k and love having it in my account, however it's got to go soon on a boiler replacement. :)

Susie477 · 09/05/2021 20:46

Well done, OP.

It’s a great feeling to have the financial security of having significant savings. It also helps you to save more money because you can buy things you need without having to pay interest on credit. Our boiler exploded, literally, in 2019 and we had the ready cash to replace it with a better one immediately.

FinallyHere · 09/05/2021 21:11

Well done

I'd be tempted to put it in premium bonds. You might just win a million.

Bonitalazenia · 28/08/2021 09:52

Well done! We're weren't going out to dinner, mooching round shops, meeting friends for coffee etc during lockdowns, although I've worked all through my dh was furloughed. He has a works van so no petrol savings but he's wasn't buying coffees etc. We've saved a lot as well, lovely feeling isn't it?

notacooldad · 28/08/2021 13:41

It really doesn't matter!
You have a substantial amount for a rainy day and you can keep saving.
Remember to treat yourself with some spare money as well though.
I was bought up to pay all Bill's and necessary expenses first and with the rest save some, spend some!!!

ComeonJulia · 28/08/2021 13:44

Well done OP youve done bloody brilliant!

coodawoodashooda · 28/08/2021 13:48

What are your tips op? And well done.

BoomChicka · 28/08/2021 13:48

Good for you! I took a new role during covid, with a payrise, and paid off my credit card/began saving for the first time ever, it's a good feeling Smile

BluebellsGreenbells · 28/08/2021 13:49

It has been good for an awful lot of people, even with extra money spend on ‘nice’ food because well lockdown, I’ve still managed to save.

I understand the frustration of not reaching a target because you feel the need to save once you get going!

My pot dipped below X because of teens needing clothes etc for 6th form and I felt gutted!!
