How much "stuff" do you have in your loft?

Having sorted out DM's loft several times in the past few years and then again when she downsized I realised how much "stuff" we have in our own loft!

Do you actually know what's in your loft, do you need what's in your loft, or is it "out of sight, out of mind...OMG what have we kept that for?!"

Fascinated to hear your loft horror stories, whether it's your own loft, someone else's loft or bizarre things left behind by previous owners/tenants...

Please tell me that I'm not the only person with virtually a spare house full of "stuff"?!

Yes. I know everything.
Kids keepsakes.
Xmas decs
Easter Dec's and baskets etc.
Sweet jars.
Halloween Dec's
1 box of fancy dress that's too big for the dcs.
. That's it. I don't keep anything that's not sentimental. Ie keepsakes.

Everying is in plastic storage boxes with printed And laminated labels. In rows with a space at the end which by summer I start putting Xmas gifts up there. Yep I'm that sad.

Hellocatshome · 09/05/2021 14:37

All of the stuff that exists in the world is in my loft. Hope that helps.

Whoateallthechocolate · 09/05/2021 14:44

Some sensible stuff - Xmas decs, Halloween decs, extra dining chairs, tower fans for the summer etc
Other stuff "for the grandchildren" (bear in mind my DC are 11 & 8) - brio, Duplo etc
Some stuff which will never get used again - DH's files from Uni (he graduated in '95 and works in an entirely unrelated industry!), DH's CD collection, camping stuff
It's all in crates or boxes so relatively easy to clear out if ever required

OldTinHat · 09/05/2021 14:44

My loft is actually an unofficial room (not enough head height) but has had all the necessary structural works in place, carpeted and has a window. I bought it like this and use it as part storage for stuff that I've still not unpacked from when I moved in 3yrs ago but mostly as a craft room as I sit on a chair when I craft and there's masses of room for my crafting stash

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/05/2021 14:45

Nothing at the moment accept an old water tank.

However it will be boarded out soon plus ladder installed. Going to be camping equipment, ski equipment, out of season coats/bedding, Christmas decorations and a small amount of keepsakes/memories... We've moved 7 times in 10years and don't keep much for sake of it. But hobbies have associated clutter.

One of our previous houses the attic had a proper floor and we had a gym up there.

kowari · 09/05/2021 14:45

Two suitcases, one inside the other, just inside the entrance hatch. Never tried to actually get up there.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 09/05/2021 14:47

Hardly anything (I have delusions of being able to afford a loft conversion one day Grin) so sorted it out years ago. Ditched anything unnecessary and the rest, decorations, keepsakes, old cots and wooden toys are all in an outbuilding (we do have a few houtbuildings though so no need to use the less accessible loft)

DinosaurDiana · 09/05/2021 14:48

Mine is full. I think it might collapse in on my when I’m in bed one day.

TheCanyon · 09/05/2021 14:48

Ours is full of baby/toddler stuff. Our youngest dc are 6 and dh has been for the snip twice, so definitely no more!! Think we would need a skip for it tbh.

lonel · 09/05/2021 14:49

I don't have a loft but have a lot in the cellar. Mainly suitcases, Christmas decorations and cds!

LakeShoreD · 09/05/2021 14:49

Suitcases, skis, Christmas decorations... that’s about it. We’re planning a loft conversion and will be reduced to eaves storage cupboards so we can’t afford to hang on to anything but the essentials.

Thelnebriati · 09/05/2021 14:49

We had a clear out and its just loft insulation now. It took days - there were boxes of useless things like old saucepans and plates up there! I even took out the boards so I wouldn't be tempted to fill it up again.

lonel · 09/05/2021 14:50

Currently trying to decide what to do with dd's dollshouse as she doesn't want it. Would be sensible to sell it as we don't have the space to store it....but what about the grandchildren?!

GaraMedouar · 09/05/2021 14:53

My loft is full of everything - Xmas decs, toddler bed and mattress , dining room chairs, old photos, lots of size 12 clothes that I will diet back into (I have been working on that since putting 4 stone on when pregnant with my DD ten years ago), old radiators, wallpaper, sleeping bags, duvets, CDs , plus an old toilet for some reason!

I also have boxes full of stuff in my understairs cupboard - no idea what’s in them but they were popped in there when I moved into the house 12 years ago!

Legoninjago1 · 09/05/2021 14:55

Nothing at all. We live next to a forest so get a lot of spiders and neither of us can face looking up there ... tho DH pretends it's for other reasons...!

7catsisnotenough · 09/05/2021 14:55

🤣I am so glad it's not just me! I long to see the bare boards up there, with a couple of beautifully labelled boxes of "memories" and "Christmas decorations"!

Currently it's a repository for the extended (deceased) family's stuff (paperwork, photos, ornaments), things like school reports (mine included 🤣) and "things that we don't currently need, but may do one day..."!!!

Sell it and put the money aside for the grandchildren?
L0bstersLass · 09/05/2021 14:58

Nothing. When we moved here my husband refused to board the loft out saying I'd need to throw away the stuff I'd brought from the loft in our old house.
He was spot on. I've not missed any of it and would have only added to it.
I'm a hoarder by nature and not having a loft keeps my worst excesses under some semblance of control.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 09/05/2021 14:59

Christmas decs

Thelnebriati · 09/05/2021 15:00

We got rid of the boards, the LL put in extra insulation and that had a knock on effect on the winter fuel bills.

LemonLemonLemon · 09/05/2021 15:02

Nothing, we opened the hatch and a load of flies flew out (apparently something to do with the type of roof tile according to previous owners??)

So we never went back up.

Have had it insulated since so I’m pretty confident there’s nothing dead up there.

oppositeofbubbly · 09/05/2021 15:05

When DH and I bought our first house we both put 'just a couple' of boxes of stuff in the loft that had been stored at our parents' houses. The loft seemed to be home to the biggest spiders in the world so I never ventured up there, but over the years DH was sent up with boxes of things that the DC wanted to keep etc. In my mind there were probably about 10 neatly packed boxes up there.

When we came to move I packed up pretty much everything in the house weeks in advance and we agreed that DH would empty the loft. For numerous reasons (not all entirely his fault but he could procrastinate for Britain ) this ended up happening the week before we moved. The contents of the loft filled the living room about 3 boxes deep and pretty much all of it went to the tip.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 09/05/2021 15:35

Nothing. I don't like ladders, so wouldn't store things I needed up there. And really have nothing to store! (I live on my own). Am a bit of a minimalist.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 09/05/2021 15:47

I do and don't have a real loft....

there the under eaves cupboard in our room which used to have the water tank in on one side but that went when the new boiler was fitted and the other side of it was jampacked full of stuff, we recently sorted that out and it's a massive bit of furniture in there that we bought years ago and I will not be parted from, a tea chest full of photos and a bout three big laundry baskets full of craft stuff so a massive improvement in there

the other "loft" is over the single storey kitchen and christ alone knows what is up there....I want it sorted but dh says he is not sorting it until a house surveyor has been cos they won't move anything and be able to moan that the house might have had woodworm a bajillion years ago. Hmm

Molehillfromamountain · 09/05/2021 15:51

We have a loft conversion so only have eaves storage now, home to xmas decs, halloween decs and easter crafty bits for the kids. A big box of family photos and a memory box each. I've also got 3 empty crates where I hide presents through the year.
It's lovely up there. DHs office on the other hand houses bits of car, motorbike, camping equipment, old toys etc. I think he likes it like that Confused
