How much "stuff" do you have in your loft?

Having sorted out DM's loft several times in the past few years and then again when she downsized I realised how much "stuff" we have in our own loft!

Do you actually know what's in your loft, do you need what's in your loft, or is it "out of sight, out of mind...OMG what have we kept that for?!"

Fascinated to hear your loft horror stories, whether it's your own loft, someone else's loft or bizarre things left behind by previous owners/tenants...

Please tell me that I'm not the only person with virtually a spare house full of "stuff"?!

We don't have a loft. I am ruthless when it comes to keeping things. I have photos and that's about it.
Nothing from when the children were small.

Mydogisagentleman · 09/05/2021 15:53

Everything in the whole world.
Every appliance box, suitcases, camping stuff, out of season clothes, shoes....
My DH is an awful hoarder hence the kettle and toaster boxes.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 09/05/2021 15:53

I don't have a loft. We have one small walk in cupboard in the hall for storing things. That's in the whole house with a family of 5 (one baby).

mermaidsariel · 09/05/2021 15:54

Half the contents of the previous house. I wouldn’t know where to start.

TeeBee · 09/05/2021 15:55

Nowt, I built two rooms in it 😄

bluestarthread · 09/05/2021 15:55

Glad it’s not just ours then! The loft gives me a full on rage. So full of crap that we moved house with and stuffed up there - baby stuff, toys, spare bedding, business records, and all the boxes for my husbands ‘collection’. One day I’ll get it sorted. Have done 3 car loads to charity shops since they reopened, and that’s just what was in the house.

AdriannaP · 09/05/2021 15:56

My DH and DBIL took 2 days to clear their DM’s loft. They found 50 year old things. She kept everything that every broke down instead of recycling it including radios, vhs players etc. For the love of your descendants please clear your lofts!

IanHBuckells · 09/05/2021 15:56

Three bedrooms and a bathroom!

When we converted ours we kept some eaves storage (full of Lego) but most of the loft stuff (Xmas tree, other season decorations, old toys etc) is in the garage.

CornishTiger · 09/05/2021 15:56

Just the Christmas tree!

SnugglySnerd · 09/05/2021 15:58

Mostly bags of older dc clothes to pass onto younger dc when they are big enough.
Also older dc school books and some of my old books and things that I am saving for when dcs are old enough for them.
Suitcases and xmas/Halloween etc decorations.
I go up there quite often to store things or get them down so I know what's there.

Tangledtresses · 09/05/2021 16:00

We have a huge completely empty loft full of the biggest cobwebs! So I don't go up there... the other loft which is small only has Christmas decorations in.
We do have a garage that is full of so much junk I'm thinking of having a garage sale...

popcorndiva · 09/05/2021 16:03

xmas decorations to the left, suitcases in the middle and baby stuff including vacumm packed clothes to the right

Second DC is arriving in July so the baby stuff will slowly come down then be passed on. I need to vaccum pack extra duvets/ pillows we have which are cluttering up wardrobes at present.

Our big junk is in garage

DramaAlpaca · 09/05/2021 16:03

So much stuff, accumulated over the years. We are considering getting a skip.

Pinkstars2501 · 09/05/2021 16:04

Stuff of our own? A couple of boxes of memory type things that I don't want to throw out.

But there's also a roll of carpet from the previous owners. Like an entire roll. They only had this particular carpet on the hall, stairs and landing, so I can only imagine they either seriously over estimated the measurements or (more likely) it came off the back of a lorry. It's a gross aubergine colour and will stay up there for all eternity because I'm not dragging it down. God knows how they got it up there, it's a whole roll Confused

WhatHaveIFound · 09/05/2021 16:04

I keep my DS in the loft because it's his bedroom!

In the cellar we have the boxes for everything we practially own plus lots of other junk too. Did try and start sorting it out last year but haven't got too far.

I'm in the process of helping my parents declutter as they have loads of clothes that don't fit any more plus years of junk. Thankfully there's nothing left in their loft any more as i don't want either of them up a stepladder.

Flappityflippers1 · 09/05/2021 16:05

Ours is awful, we really do need to get a skip and clear it out.

  • clothes. So many clothes.
  • old curtains and bedding (I change decor a lot Confused )
  • Xmas decs
  • Halloween decs
  • some stuff related to my last job that could go
  • baby toys
  • old files, junk out of drawers, paperwork
  • old furniture (thing crappy plastic tower drawers)
  • suitcases
  • magazines/comics, CDs etc that DH won’t part with

It’s so bad up there, hardly any room now and I’m sure it’ll collapse one day!

confusedofengland · 09/05/2021 16:05

Our loft is a walk-in, literally a door off our bedroom, so it is far too easy to put things in there Blush

We have:

  • Clothes, shoes & football boots to pass between the 3 Dses, including some given to us for DS1
  • lots of leads
  • Adult fancy dress (no not that sort!)
  • Halloween bits
  • Xmas docs
  • Suitcases & bags
  • Boxes of memory things for each DS which I must sort out
  • A rocking chair
  • Spare duvets & sleeping bags
  • Books
  • My gift box
  • Lots of photos
  • Beach stuff

And probably more! Really need a sort out but never have time Blush

WhatHaveIFound · 09/05/2021 16:06

Also i've moved into two previous houses where the sellers have left loads of junk in the loft which is very annoying.

Crimeismymiddlename · 09/05/2021 16:06

I don’t have a lot-tiny flat and hate clutter so two suit cases and half a flat pack wardrobe.

MutteringDarkly · 09/05/2021 16:27

Absolutely nothing. And we have no garage. My working premise is that I hate going into dark spaces with potential crawly things, so anything I would consider putting into the loft, I am unlikely to ever get out again. So it can be passed on, recycled or chucked.

We have a one in - one out rule for most things here (fairly minimalist) with the exception of "precious" stuff DC want to keep in their room, which is totally up to them. I'm not going to impose minimalism on kids Smile

Oblomov21 · 09/05/2021 16:28

Ours is full.
Christmas decs, baby mementos, camping stuff, boxes full of Dh's football memorabilia.

DrunkenKoala · 09/05/2021 20:17

We have a loft conversion which is DS’s bedroom. In the eaves are all things relating to Christmas, Easter and Halloween, suitcases and other holiday bits and bobs.

DelurkingAJ · 09/05/2021 21:41

Xmas decorations, boxes for current electronics, couple of memory boxes each for DH and I, clothing from DS1 for DS2 to grow into, quality baby toys (Duplo, wooden toys and a few very favourites), some maternity clothing which could go, photos (all with names etc on the back as I sorted the lot whilst on maternity leave with DS2).

CadburyCake · 09/05/2021 22:00

Nothing, our house doesn’t have one. But I am not remotely sentimental and have no interest in hoarding stuff - almost everything the kids outgrow immediately leaves the house. I photograph their best artwork and writing, but that almost all gets thrown away fairly rapidly. I’m not interested in keeping old clothes, ornaments etc and I long ago disposed of my old schoolwork etc. We have an under stairs cupboard for the Christmas decorations, the suitcases are nested inside each other and under a bed and each child has about one box worth of “memory stuff” on top of their wardrobe. Beach stuff lives in the garage with the bikes.

I have helped empty too many attics from elderly relatives who’ve died or gone into a home - the huge stacks of decades worth of mundane Christmas cards from everyone they’ve ever met, the empty box from every electrical appliance they ever bought, the eleven billion crap paperbacks, the china set from their second cousin, their fathers diary that literally just details the weather and what they had for dinner each night... it all just goes into a skip. I’d rather save my relatives the bother.

Hmmm. I think I needed to hear that.
