How much "stuff" do you have in your loft?

Having sorted out DM's loft several times in the past few years and then again when she downsized I realised how much "stuff" we have in our own loft!

Do you actually know what's in your loft, do you need what's in your loft, or is it "out of sight, out of mind...OMG what have we kept that for?!"

Fascinated to hear your loft horror stories, whether it's your own loft, someone else's loft or bizarre things left behind by previous owners/tenants...

Please tell me that I'm not the only person with virtually a spare house full of "stuff"?!

Loft aka L.O.F.T, Land Of Forgotten Things.

Absolutely nothing in mine- never been in it! 🙈🤣

AlmostSummer21 · 10/05/2021 15:56

@LindaEllen

We have nothing in our loft at all. I'm of the opinion that if you can put it in the loft, you can put it in the bin.

Christmas decs go under the stairs.

What's the difference between the under stairs cupboard & the loft?

If that plan works for you, great. Maybe it depends how much storage space/spare rooms you have in the house.

But no, the things in my loft don't belong in the bin

We have so much stuff up there.

About 5 boxes of Xmas decorations..
Another box of Halloween decorations
Easter bits
My DH football trophies from when he was a kid! 🙄
Wedding mementoes inc my dress (been married over a decade!)
Every single item of clothing DD has ever owned! She's 5! Her old cot and then cot bed inc 2 mattresses. A Moses basket.
A load of baby toys, her pram and her pushchair. A load of toys I secretly took from her room to clear to space.

We are not having any more children so I don't know why we have kept it all but I tried to sort it all out and ended up in floods of tears 🤣
We can never have a loft conversion that's for sure!!

BrieAndChilli · 10/05/2021 17:00

a loft it worth its weight in gold!!!
old house was flat roof so had no loft. Meant old toys eg wooden train track that we want to keep for grandkids etc had to be stored in the house. now its packed up in the loft as we have moved
the new house is so much more uncluttered - cupboard space has been freed up by not having to store xmas tree decs, study is tidy as no kids books we want to keep but are too young for the kids now.

Nothing at all just now (moved in fairly recently). We’ve got some things stacked in the spare room that are planned to go up there at some point, but it won’t be a lot - Christmas tree, camping equipment, ladder.

We don't have a loft, we have an attic. A proper haunted house, creepy, creaky stairs with a door at the top and bottom attic. There's an old rocking chair near the window of course (there really is) and then about 30 years of accumulated junk, kids toys, furniture and books.

Ninkanink · 10/05/2021 17:19

@FatCatThinCat that’s fantastic! I’m not a ‘woo’ person but I really want there to be such a thing as ghosts in creaky attics!

HeronLanyon · 10/05/2021 17:25

I’ve recently cleared my dad’s and my mum’s lofts after their deaths. My dad came from a long line of those who did not deal with stuff on parents deaths. Siblings and I have 4 generations of attic stuff to deal with. Some really lovely. Best finds - a buffalo bill pistol holster (with pistol - colt - in it). Trunks and full of great grandparents daily stuff - diaries/letters/dance cards/ration books etc. Great to see and keep some of. A lot of Native American things now donated to state historical society and state nations historical societies.
A lot just for for dump now.
I determined to clear my own lofts. I haven’t. Not sure what’s up there ! Only have hatches not easier access so it kind of out of sight out of mind. Pretty sure I have school/university and other younger stuff. No need to keep it ! Don’t think I need o and a level certificates now ffs.

You say that but you'll soon change your mind when you're all alone in the house but can hear someone running around up there in the middle of the night. I convince myself it the cats even though I know they can't get up there.

Christmas decorations and a big bag of accumulated wrapping paper, tags, ribbons, etc. Plus a ‘stable’ and nativity set I made for Gdcs, kept here since dd has less room.

Several large seat/back cushions from an old sofa, which are now and then used to make an extra bed on the floor when we’ve run out of actual beds.

A suitcase full of kids memorabilia, birth congrats cards, their ‘art work’ from nursery school, etc.

A travel cot for visiting Gdcs, plus a proper mattress for it rather than the thin thing it came with.

Several plastic boxes of still-too-big hand me down kids’ clothes passed by friends to a dd, who doesn’t have room to store them.

Somewhere, a suitcase with the suit dh got married in, ditto my dress, now at least 2 sizes too small.

Somewhere, a Quality Street tin containing the top tier of our wedding cake from 1974!!!

Some leftover carpet, kept in case of disasters meaning a patch would be needed.

A suitcase full of dh’s university books/papers, none of which he’s looked at in at least 45 years.

And this is after we actually got rid of a lot of stuff several years ago, when dh decided to re-insulate and re-board the loft.

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 10/05/2021 18:56

In our old house:
Unused furniture I didn't want to throw away
Christmas decs
Stuff from my childhood home I'd never sorted through
Boxes belonging to my sister
Random stuff from DHs childhood
Suitcase containing a smaller suitcase which contained swimming costumes / sarongs etc.

In our new house:
1 box of keepsakes each
1 box with wedding keepsakes in
Christmas decs (too many boxes Blush )
DH's camping stuff (temporarily while waiting to organise a shed)
Holiday suitcases.

We've only been in this house 4 months though - give me time!
