Fancy a day out exploring a new city - Bath, Oxford?

I fancy of having a day out once restrictions lift of a new city. Somewhere with beautiful architecture and nice cafes to sit outside of and shops to explore.

I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of places to go in the South East. I have never been to Bath or Oxford so I was thinking of one of those? Does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts?

Thank you!

Both are lovely if you like looking at the architecture. I haven't been to either for a few years now. Might do both as day trips soon too - thanks for making me think about it! (I prefer Bath to Oxford)

Winchester is nice too.

Well my 'thing' is art, so if I was going to Bath I'd be going to the Victoria Gallery and the Holburne and in Oxford the Ashmolean. I'm fairly familiar with both towns, and I'll say this much - personally I think the cafes are far better and more varied in Oxford. My experience of Bath is that so many eating places are really at restaurant end of things - formal and expensive - whereas Oxford is more relaxed and has a much better cafe vibe to it.

Bath and Oxford both lovely. You could also try Canterbury

look up oxford open doors. It's a week-end when lots of places are free to visitors. good time to choose.

I have lived in both and prefer Bath to Oxford. Oxford is all about the colleges. Both are doable for a day trip though.

Bath recommendations are the same as @giletrouge

for Oxford you have the ashmolean and the natural history musem and lots of bicycles. Both have fairly central train stations if travelling by train, otherwise I would park and ride.

If in Oxford go the the Pitt Rivers museum of ethnography (next to the Natural History Museum). It is simply the best museum in the world ever Grin. I adored it as a child and still visit regularly.

Both Bath and Oxford are great for a city break visit regardless.

Bath is quite touristy. Oxford is nice but yes, more about the university. You could go to the spa in Bath, if that's your thing. And a trip to the Roman Baths.

Oh yes and Pitt-Rivers! Good call Grumpyoldpersonwithcats.

Utterly unique place, fabulous.

Bath isn't in the South East.

Bath is lovely. It’s in the South West.
