Family car for small family with older DC (no car seat requirement)

Really struggling to find the car for us. Really like the look, feel and drive of the SUVs like Sportage, Tuscon, T Rock etc but practically we just dont need something so big.
We tried the Hyundai Kona yesterday which is a mini SUV but it was so boring, there was nothing exciting about it.
Any suggestions?
Our car usage is a v short commute, the odd tip run and a couple of trips to the airport with 4 suitcases.
It seems madness to get a car the size of a Sportage for that!

Additional info: we already have a city car as 2 commutes. So the new car is going to be the 'out and about car'.

I looked at a Peugeot 2005 which was quite nice and a similar look. Had a Golf GTi years ago which was fun to drive, but not sure what the current ones are like.

I have a similar dilemma. I have a Peugeot 2008 and absolutely love it but fancied a change. I have test driven t-cross but wasn't a comfortable ride so that's out.

I looked at Suzuki which was ok but not as funky as mine. So I think I will replace mine with new Peugeot although I prefer my older version.
