Fucking hell, prednisolone is hideous. Any tips?

Horrid outer ear infection from psoriasis, refusing to clear up after 2 bouts of antibs and creams etc. Dr has kindly put me on 6x5mg for 5 days and I feel like I might actually lose my mind.

It’s horrendous! I’ve slept for about 8 seconds in 3 days and feel like my head is going to pop off. Really want to finish the course so ear doesn’t fall off, but also wouldn’t mind being put into a coma so I could chill out a bit!

What time do you take the tablets? I find first thing in the morning is better, so they've worn off slightly by bedtime. I still don't sleep particularly well, but much better than when I took them of an evening.

I've seen them referred to elsewhere as the devils tictacs which I'd say is pretty accurate!

They are pretty hideous. I find I achieve a lot though what with the inability to sit still or sleep.

TheCanyon · 08/05/2021 19:44

Take all 6 first thing in the morning. They are indeed awful. Hope your ears better soon

Oh blimey. I had absolutely no idea they affected people like this!! I've taken them almost every year from being quite small for chest infections and never had any side effects. Can you ask for an alternative at all?

LivingMyBestLife2020 · 08/05/2021 19:52

I take 50mg for 9 weeks at a time, on and off for Crohns. Nothing helps the insomnia I’m afraid. It’s only for 5 days, you’ll be fine. Use the extra hours to be productive ☺️

TheVolturi · 08/05/2021 20:08

Use the extra hours to be productive 🙄 she's unwell and fucking knackered! 🙄
Try some piriton at bedtime op, hope you're better soon.

PrawnChair · 08/05/2021 20:13

Take prednisolone first thing in the morning, and then take anti histamine an hour before bed.

I feel for you, it's horrible - I am on them regularly (with monteleukast) and I cycle between terrifying reality dreams and insominia for weeks when I am taking them.

It's really awful to feel unwell, be trying to fight an illness and not be able to sleep.

Ostryga · 08/05/2021 20:29

Antihistamine! That’s a great shout thank you.

Oh I am being productive - I was cleaning in between the floorboards at 2am Confused

Really feel for anyone that has to take this regularly. It’s absolutely appalling.

It’s the only way to pass the time and stops you getting frustrated.

Once you stop you’ll get back to sleep. It’s really good stuff just hideous on the side effect front.

AC12reject · 09/05/2021 00:04

I used take mine at 530am so I could get an hour or so sleep somewhere. Before that I was awake for the best part of a week.

QueenPaw · 09/05/2021 00:15

Definitely make sure it's first thing!
I once had them for pneumonia (I thought it was a chest infection and was looking around for the sick person when a doctor came running out with a nebuliser. Hint, if you can't stop coughing, you can't breathe) Blush
Anyway I had 8 nebulisers that weekend plus two types of antibiotics plus the steroids and my god I was wired Grin

Strokethefurrywall · 09/05/2021 03:23

Fuck me it’s awful stuff. I had to take it for pneumonia about 5 years ago but I didn’t have any trouble sleeping on account of the severe lung infection and all that.
But I didn’t taste anything for 10 days and couldn’t eat for the same amount of time and rapidly lost 10lbs in 10 days. I looked like a fucking skeleton (I’m 5’ 8”) and was a jittery basket case.

FrenchFancie · 09/05/2021 04:31

I’ve had to take it in the past - take it first thing in the morning. Try and do as much physical exercise during the day as you can, I found it got some of the ‘jitters’ out of my system. Do not drink coffee!!
Other than that, know that you’ll catch up on your sleep when you stop.
Two years ago my dd, then 5 years old, took it following a very nasty asthma attack. Dealing with a wired 5 year old was a fun week....
