Gloomy weekend!

Need a boost with my thinking!
Gloomy day and the house is quite dark which doesn’t help! Dp watching something in bed, ds on phone in bed, dd probably doing similar ( 13 and 16). Am looking at tidying, cooking brunch, washing..I’m completely out of ideas as to what to do as a family or what to do at all that’s fun.
What do other people with teens do?
How do I get rid of this awful grey gloom - in reality and in my brain😃. Colourful emojis might help! 🤪🥳🤩😜🥰🌺🎄🎄🎄🎄and I’ll put the kettle on....other ideas desperately welcome !

I try and get one job done, like a floor mopped or drawer cleaned out. Something I’ve been putting off, small achievement. Then get out of the house...blustery wet walk, we’ll have to take the dog out later and always feel better for having got out.

Whymrsrobinson · 08/05/2021 10:16

Oh that’s a good idea, a feeling of achievement is appealing!

do other people with teens let them do their own thing on weekends or should we be sharing breakfast/ tidying house together? What do other people do?

I leave mine to it mostly, offer to join me for whatever else I might be doing, dog walking, whatever, which they do sometimes. Sometimes 's we do a bbq with everyone's favourites, recently invite a guest or 2. We happy enough with that. Not quite ready for big mingling yet.

confusedofengland · 08/05/2021 10:32

We are getting homework out of the way & then I am working from 1pm. That way we have tomorrow clear & it is supposed to be a nice day here (Essex)

Woodlandbelle · 08/05/2021 10:34

I am kind of just going with it. If its gloomy light a few candels. Warm bath. Watch some nice YouTube videos or whatever is your thing. Read a book.

Foghead · 08/05/2021 10:38

My teens are still in bed.
I made everyone join in with a cleaning and laundry frenzy yesterday after school so things are fairly clean and tidy.

Today will be a lazy day and everyone can do what they want (plus homework) but we’ll come together for meals and watch a film together tonight.

I’m taking my coffee back to bed and will read. Planning on doing a couple of hours work. I’ll drag the dcs out for a walk tomorrow when it’s not raining so much.

Whymrsrobinson · 08/05/2021 10:45

Thanks guys. Reassuring to know that you are being chilled. BettySweaty it’s nice to know that you are not ready for big mingling yet.
It sometimes Feels like everybody else has this amazingly fun life 😜

When it's horrible like this, I use it as an excuse to get stuck in to everything that needs doing in the house that I don't get the chance to do if we're out and about. I get everyone involved, and usually it's done by mid afternoon then we all do our own thing! Usually gaming for DSS and DP and reading/TV binging for me. Then come together for dinner and perhaps watch a film together with popcorn in the evening.

I would very much like summer to come back!

Whymrsrobinson · 08/05/2021 11:22

Thanks lindaEllen! Am finally mending the drainage to the sink, go me! I’m a genius and have save £40 and a lot of tut tuts off a plumber. That’s got to be a good thing! Getting everyone involved to tidy sounds good. And yes to summer!

Think I'm going to do some batch cooking later, maybe a chilli, some scones, not sure what else yet....

Whymrsrobinson · 08/05/2021 20:36

BettySweaty How was the cooking? In the end I watched tangled with dd so it was nice. Honestly have no idea about teens. What do you watch on tv together? Dh put on Johnnie dark o tonight which was quite quickly a no no!

Well I couldn't find the sugar so went to the sainsburys and came back with a pair of jeans, 2 bottles of cabernet sauvingnon and a family pack of crisps. Just on my second glass now Grin

BettySweaty · 08/05/2021 21:08

Together we have watched the suff with Johnny Vegas, dial m for Middlesbrough, taskmaster, that sort of thing. Ds1 16 ds2 13

🤣🤣 sounds like a winning evening🍷
Whymrsrobinson · 08/05/2021 21:55

Ho Ho BettySweaty that sounds great! I had a civilised glass of white while I kicked up chicken tetrazzini ( ok, chicken, pasta tin of mushroom soup lots of cheese) and somehow half the bottle disappeared! I mean, how?!
Dial m for middlesborough looks just the thing. They loved cobra Kai, stranger things, it crowd. But now am really struggling, so delighted to see your suggestions.
It wasn’t such a rubbish day after all! Suspect a lot of it was thanks to you guys. Knowing you are not alone is a BIG help!

Just stumbled upon this thread and feel exactly the same as you OP. My DC would spend all day every day plugged into screens if we let them, and I end up pottering about, slightly bored but not sure what I actually want to be doing and imagining everyone else is out doing fun stuff.

Glad you had a good day in the end. I went for a run this morning, then had a bath, and cleaned the bathroom. DH watched rugby and then vacuumed. The DCs came down from their rooms for lunch and dinner and we watched Taskmaster and Alan Partridge and everyone seemed happy. Not the most exciting day, might try to drag them out for a walk in the woods tomorrow.

Whymrsrobinson · 08/05/2021 22:17

Lalallama, that’s exactly how I feel! And yes, usually potter about cleaning the sink or similar, equally slightly bored and sure everyone else is having a brilliant time with mates. I’d forgotten about Alan partridge.
Sunday next! And that’s all about nagging for uniforms ironing etc. Or is it? Again, what do you guys do?. Not that I’m desperate . Oh wait, yes I am🤪

I'm so exciting I went to bed straight after I wrote my message last night. So rock and roll.

The weather is still looking a bit shitty here today but we're going to try to get everyone out for a walk. The youngest will moan but once out it'll do us all good and they tend to be a bit more sociable after we left the house.

Was thinking we could watch a film but both DC's have completely different tastes in films and we've still not managed to find anything they both want to watch apart from Back to the Future.

Even though it's raining I do still imagine that everyone else has friends round in the garden and all the DC's are chatting happily together. Grin

BettySweaty · 09/05/2021 09:49

Morning all. I've got ds1 rugby soon, will take the dog, so that will kill a bit of time. Not sure about later on though....

(Managed to polish off all the wine somehow last night with dp Wink)

Glad you all had nice, laid back weekends. Ended up washing and being ignored by teens when I ask them about rooms, uniforms etc etc and in forever. Have to say it’s a joy to be in bed now! My new theory is if I go to bed super early I still get a lie in, it’s just an earlier lie n.😜 than for sharing, it’s odd how sometimes the weight of being a mum, even of older kids can be so very heavy. So nice. To know yo are ut there!💐
