Best red wine to drink chilled?

Hi everyone.

Now I aren't into red wine warm and rich that just isn't my palate however I do like a red that's chilled over ice.

Gallo used to to a summer red that was lovely but looks like it's been discontinued, and Jam Shed is ok with ice too.

Just wondered if anyone had any others to try over ice?

Thanks.

Barefoot Jammy, or Yellow tail jammy red roo, both delicious chilled.

midsomermurderess · 07/05/2021 17:13

You could make your own tinto de verano.

A Fleurie can be nice chilled, but I'm not sure how that compares to what you usually drink.

Beaujolais.

A couple of years ago Aldi did a sparkling Shiraz that’s as designed to be drank chilled. It was a bit of a mindfuck but so good!
Never seen it in person since but just looked online and there’s options to be had including a jacobs creek one

Barefoot Jammy red. It’s so good.

HavelockVetinari · 07/05/2021 18:31

Saumur Champigny is excellent chilled.

HavelockVetinari · 07/05/2021 18:32

(I'm not a big fan of red, but when I was a waitress during my gap year in France I was taught to always ask whether the customer wanted the Saumur chilled or not)

Cleverpolly3 · 07/05/2021 18:38

Don’t know if it’s still about but Brown Brothers Tarango is a red wine that is lovely lightly chilled

thevassal · 07/05/2021 18:41

agree with others that barefoot jammy red is the closest I've come to the gallo summer red. No idea why they discontinued the summer red, it seemed really popular.

They are definitely not for wine connoisseurs (like drinking alcoholic vimto!) but I agree with you OP, sooo delicious!

Sugarbellaella · 07/05/2021 19:12

You want a Beaujolais or a Pinot noir - something fruity with very light tannins. The Saumur Champigny the pp mentions is a Cab Franc that would work well too. The barefoot and yellow tails are loaded with added sugar to make them
Palatable!

Jam Shed Shiraz

Fruityfriday · 07/05/2021 19:16

Oops sorry you mentioned Jam shed

Red Sancerre is delicious, not lots of it about but I think Sainsbury’s have started doing one.

jaundicedoutlook · 07/05/2021 19:51

I wouldn’t put it over ice, but a pinot noir from Alsace is very nice chilled.

If you have to have ice then a really rough Sicilian red would work.

BoomChicka · 07/05/2021 19:55

Ooh you've just taken me back to flopping down outside a restaurant in Greece, it was about 35°, the owner came over and said I know just what you need.. and brought me an ice cold glass of red!! I thought he was mad, but it was delicious! Never found out what it was though!

Cakemonger · 07/05/2021 20:05

Beaujolais and pinot noir are my faves to drink chilled. I love chilled red wine and now drink it more than room temperature wine.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 07/05/2021 20:17

Find a sparkling Shiraz. I think maybe Jacobs Creek used to do one?

yuccaplant · 07/05/2021 20:21

Yellow tail Jammy Red Roo without a shadow of a doubt!

MangosteenSoda · 07/05/2021 20:21

Make a tinto de verano/buy any sparkling red (yes they exist!)/get a cheapy box and chill with lemon slices.

If you fancy a nicer ‘cool’ red, go for a pinot noir and chill to around 16 degrees.

doublenotdobble · 08/05/2021 07:45

Another vote for tinto de verano! I get a bottle of toro loco and some lemonade, in a tall glass with lots of ice. Delicious
