You book a quick trim, you get a quick trim

Someone I know have just had a quite a drastic change of hairstyle, let’s say going from shoulder length to pixie type of hairstyle. When it came up in a conversation she’s said that she booked for a quick trim but changed her mind the day before the appointment. Claims the hairdresser didn’t mind and just charged for a proper cut.
I thought it a bit rude, also a proper cut takes longer than a trim, other clients might have to wait etc. She sees no problem... Am I overreacting?
A first world problem, I know.

I suspect it might be that OP's friend is often selfish or thoughtless or careless and this - admittedly not very good - example of that attitude is the one that's made OP's camel back break?

paralysedbyinertia · 06/05/2021 18:47

@Tofflee

You book car for new tires, you don’t expect your brakes getting done or do you?
Well, if your brakes need doing, you would ask the mechanic if they had time to do them. If they said yes, then you get them done. If they say no, then you book in another available slot. I don't see what is difficult to understand about this?
Foresttheout · 06/05/2021 18:49

Surely if it annoyed the hair dresser they would just say so? I have done this twice in the 5 years I've been using my hair dresser. Once i decided last minute I fancied a new colour and she had time so did it. Second time i decided on a more extensive cut she said she didn't have time right then but if I was happy to pop back in the afternoon it could be done which I did

I understand @Tofflee not a hairdresser but
It drives me mad when I have people booked in for something that should take X amount of time but they then request XYZ. It means I run late for the next people and/or -more importantly- I don’t have time for a loo break or tea break or whatever. People should book an appropriate appointment.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 06/05/2021 18:50

Any hairdresser I’ve booked with, you just book a cut and blow dry / cut, colour and blow dry. A couple of the more upmarket salons charge more for a restyle than a trim 🤷‍♀️ my current hairdresser just has a standard price for a cut. So I can’t see it being an issue at all.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 06/05/2021 18:51

Yes, if they find a problem with my brakes Confused

Every hairdresser I’ve ever been to, you book for a cut and blow dry. It doesn’t matter how much or little you want taking off, you’re charged the same amount and allocated the same amount of time.

Is there a backstory with this friend as to why this has bothered you so much?

roguetomato · 06/05/2021 18:51

Does it really matter? If the hairdresser couldn't do it, she would have said so. But she was fine with it. Plus extra money. I don't see why you are bothered.

Ifailed · 06/05/2021 18:51

Tyres.

BertieBotts · 06/05/2021 18:52

I have never specified exactly what I want done when I make a hair appointment. I often leave it wayyy too long between appointments as well so it generally is a full restyle. It really doesn't take that long - maybe half an hour?

What a weird concern.

Yes if she wanted a complicated colour job that would have taken several hours, then it would have been unreasonable to just add it onto the appointment for a trim, but then the hairdresser would probably have said "That will take too long to do today, can I book you in for that next week?"

Such a non problem :o

NoSquirrels · 06/05/2021 18:55

@minniep

In my experience hairdressers love the opportunity to do lots of cutting so the stylist was probably delighted
I agree. And yes, “a trim” will take as long as a restyle if you’ve got longish hair - and I suspect most hairdressers are pretty happy right now to take the extra money for a restyle.

In terms of inconveniencing anyone, I genuinely don’t think it would - if it was a colour added on obviously that would be different but just hair cutting - of any sort - is pretty average.

Are you actually your ‘friend’s’ mum or partner and feeling aggrieved cos you don’t like the radical restyle Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2021 18:56

Oh! I went in yesterday, first time n 6 months. Hairdresser smiled and offered a new look based on the new length. No panic, just reactng to what was sat in front of her.

It's what they do!

You book car for new tires, you don’t expect your brakes getting done or do you? Yes! And anything else that they might notice!

LadyGAgain · 06/05/2021 18:57

I envy you OP. I wish I had so little to think about.

LolaSmiles · 06/05/2021 19:00

I don't think my hairdresser has ever asked what I'm having in lots of detail before, unless they knew I was planning a substantial colour change as the appointment time would be longer depending on the colour I chose.

A cut is a cut whether it's 2cm 10cm. Why does it bother you?

Tofflee · 06/05/2021 19:03

I’m also the person who gets annoyed if someone at the bank or post office takes forever discussing various problems and options while the line is forming. A bit of respect to other humans. Judge me if you want!

What an utterly weird worry. Really can’t grasp this one.

pinkscrunchy · 06/05/2021 19:03

Judged.

StevieNix · 06/05/2021 19:03

But it’s nothing to do with you so I’m struggling to see why you would care? The hairdresser said yes so clearly didn’t mind Hmm

CatCup · 06/05/2021 19:04

Weird post.

pinkscrunchy · 06/05/2021 19:05

When are we meant to discuss these things? Only when we can be sure a line isn't forming. I've waited to speak to the clerk too. I will take care of all my business when it's my turn.

OneDrop · 06/05/2021 19:05

So you tend to think people doing a job have no right or responsibility to carry out that job, it’s the job of the customer to take responsibility for queues etc?

What do you expect the person being served to do? Not ask at all about whatever is being dealt with or come back another time? Sounds like you need to decompress a bit...
TheWaif · 06/05/2021 19:05

I don't know what you're talking about. The hairdresser would obviously have told her if she didn't have time to do the proper cut.

And why you would even think to care about this is way beyond me.

SuperMonkeys · 06/05/2021 19:08

Presumably the post office queuer has also queued for the privilege of actually speaking to someone?

But yeah, odd thing to be wound up by as it literally had nothing to do with you. If you had been a theoretical appointment theoretically affected by a bit more hair being cut off then I would get your point more.

Roominmyhouse · 06/05/2021 19:10

I used to be a hairdresser. We didn’t have a ‘quick trim’ option when booking appointments. We would book you in for a wash and cut (30 mins) or a wash cut and blow dry (45 mins). Your slot would be the same regardless of how much was being cut off. The only thing we might have done would be to book a little longer for drying/styling for very thick hair.

CaptainHammer · 06/05/2021 19:10

My hair dresser is lovely. She also regularly runs over time because someone coming in for a quick fringe trim suddenly wants a whole different style. She’s too nice, needs the money and doesn’t want to lose clients to say no.
I’d say it’s a bit cheeky if your hairdresser thinks you’re coming in for your regular trim to then want something that’ll take a lot longer without phoning and checking first. It can be difficult for the hairdresser to say no if they have been on the spot when someone arrives for their hair cut.
