Jehovah Witness sending letter

Maggiesgirl · 06/05/2021 15:54

I recieved a letter today, addressed to 'The xxxxxx Family' at our address. Opened it to find a handwritten letter from a male, asking to visit to talk to me about becoming a Jehovah Witness!

Seeing as I was born Jewish and am now an atheist i wont be taking him up on his offer.

But is this the Covid Secure way of them knocking on our door now!

Yes it is.

I have had a letter and I know a few others have too. It was such a shame as I was pleased to have received a handwritten letter as it's rare now... I was most disappointed when I read it!

Maggiesgirl · 06/05/2021 16:07

Same here, nobody sends letters any more. Its such a shame.

Still his letter went straight in the bin. Did wonder how he got our name though. I did wonder how he got our name and how he picked us ( just DH and I live here). We don't know many people in the village and I dont go out much.

They get it from the electoral roll, it’s available to buy.

Yep we got one too.

TheDogsMother · 06/05/2021 16:10

We received a letter which went in the bin. It was beautifully written though.

Timeforabiscuit · 06/05/2021 16:11

I got one too, first thought was ooh handwritten! then thinking ah crap the only people hand writing notes are anonymous complainers, and then the crashing disappointment of biblical rambling.

In the bin it went.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 06/05/2021 16:11

yeah we've had one, I guess its less annoying that door knocking!

Deathraystare · 06/05/2021 16:13

They used to come around to us when we lived in East Dulwich every Christmas Day!!!! Ok so people more likely to be in then but I used to joke with my mum that they came round after everyone had rowed because as you know they do not celebrate Christmas (or birthdays).

Heartofstrings · 06/05/2021 16:15

Dh used to be a jw as a child. His parents still are jw.

We had a handwritten letter asking about me, by name, our children. Discussing his hobbies, house and business. Thanking him for supporting his parents with food shopping throughout covid.

Dh was furious. Brought up a lot of bad memories for him. A very personal letter.

They are in financial and legal crisis currently due to court cases in some countries

Maggiesgirl · 06/05/2021 16:25

I must admit I did find it a bit intrusive. O never answer the door to them ( you can usually tell if its JW or the Mormons). I can see anyone coming up my path so ignore them. Feels like they hot in by stealth.

We got one but not addressed to us personally just the house, we are on the non public electoral register. Our neighbours are JW and I haven't seen them go out door knocking all through covid so they must be writing letters instead

EversoDelighted · 06/05/2021 16:29

Yes, us too. Binned without reading.

Newnamefor2021 · 06/05/2021 16:30

Yep, that's their new approach. As for Mormons, they are going on Facebook groups with things that interest them say, gaming, sewing, cars, cats, whatever and then messaging people from the group talking about shared interests and then bring religion into it.

They all have to find new creative ways to convert people. I'd like to think that the last year has helped more people leave too though, so swings and roundabouts I suppose.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/05/2021 16:32

We got one too

EBearhug · 06/05/2021 16:33

Mine was just addressed to Dear Neighbour, so the electoral roll won't stop it. It didn't actually mention the JWs at all, other than the from address was the Kingdom Hall, which not everyone will know is the JWs. It was mostly going on about bees in the garden.

minniemomo · 06/05/2021 16:43

I prefer that to them knocking on the door. The Mormons are the ones that hang out near me never had a JW - they just sit with leaflets in the park chatting amongst themselves. The Mormons annoy me more because they are mostly American teens who should be doing something useful on their gap year, I'm sure Jesus or god would prefer they help with the poor or needy

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/05/2021 16:46

I'm sure Jesus or god would prefer they help with the poor or needy
They do , they are very active in shipping for elderly people, mowing lawns doing DIY for people who can’t afford handymen etc

AdaColeman · 06/05/2021 16:48

Yes. I've had one of these letters.
On seeing the hand written envelope, with my name spelt incorrectly, as you might if you'd only heard my name, my first thought was that it was from someone's husband announcing their death.
I was quite apprehensive opening it, so in some ways it was a relief that it was only to tell me to read the Bible to get through dark times.

I did feel it was intrusive, and it had a very patronising tone. The male writer made some sweeping assumptions about my life. I think anyone feeling very low, and receiving that letter, could have been extremely upset.

PhilCornwall1 · 06/05/2021 16:50

If the letters don't work, they'll be employing a call centre next, just to add to the million other pain in the arse calls we get.

idontlikealdi · 06/05/2021 16:51

They've been doing this since lockdown1 here, they hand deliver them dear neighbour. Must take bloody hours.

bellropes · 06/05/2021 16:57

I caught one talking to my teenage son who has aspergers. He's very gullible and believes what people tell him. I went through the JW like a dose of salts, phoned their head office and threatened hellfire and brimstone if they ever darkened my door again. Not a peep from them since. I educated ds about cults and their tactics and hope he's taken it on board. The last thing I need to deal with is brainwashing, life is hard enough as it is.

They target vulnerable and newly bereaved people as well. I don't have words bad enough for them.

Fifthtimelucky · 06/05/2021 17:55

We had one too. Not addressed to us by name but something like 'To my neighbour' with the address. The writer lived two roads away but had put a stamp on.

She apologised for writing and said that normally she would have called round but wasn't doing that because of Covid.

hiredandsqueak · 06/05/2021 18:01

Yes I had one too. Handwritten as well. How mind numbingly boring to sit writing letters that will most likely end up in the bin.

newnortherner111 · 06/05/2021 18:21

I had one a few years ago, which I shredded.

Cocolapew · 06/05/2021 18:25

Oh I had one of those a few weeks ago, we thought it might have been something to do with my MIL. I didn't realise it was 'thing' .
