Jehovah Witness sending letter

Maggiesgirl · 06/05/2021 15:54

I recieved a letter today, addressed to 'The xxxxxx Family' at our address. Opened it to find a handwritten letter from a male, asking to visit to talk to me about becoming a Jehovah Witness!

Seeing as I was born Jewish and am now an atheist i wont be taking him up on his offer.

But is this the Covid Secure way of them knocking on our door now!

When I moved into my new house a few years ago two polite and smart young men called while I was having a tea break. I immediately invited them in and they started on the usual line about god, bible etc. As an athiest but with an interest/ intrigue of religious belief I started to pose some questions and dilemmas to their theories. We had some great discussions and I kept asking them to explain more about their customs and beliefs.
Eventually after 20mins they but looked at each other and got up and left, I was never visited again in the whole time I lived in that house! Maybe they have a blacklist of addresses.

We got one last year. I’m surprised they don’t knock more often tbh, we’re very close to a Kingdom Hall. Think they’ve only knocked twice since we moved in, thankfully...

AllTheCakes · 07/05/2021 11:22

I received one recently too. Definitely handwritten. Thankfully they only addressed it to the house and not to us by name.

I had one of these a few months ago. I’m in Australia so must be an international campaign 😆

@minniemomo

I prefer that to them knocking on the door. The Mormons are the ones that hang out near me never had a JW - they just sit with leaflets in the park chatting amongst themselves. The Mormons annoy me more because they are mostly American teens who should be doing something useful on their gap year, I'm sure Jesus or god would prefer they help with the poor or needy
Don’t the Mormons do odd jobs. I would be writing them a list.

We had one this morning. Handwritten with fountain pen but we were tempted to correct the many spelling and punctuation errors with red pen and send it back.

Not worth the time or the cost of a stamp so it's in the recycling bin now.

Gatekeeper · 07/05/2021 12:38

we got one yesterday but with just our address on- no name. It slavvered on about learning 'the truth' blah blah but also managed to incorporate a plug for his cleaning business as well!

I used it to pick up a bit of poo that one of our cats had scratted out of the litter tray

@HHSchultz

I am very close to a JW , she is now 100 years old and has been writing some of the letters. She is so sweet and has been a witness for 50 years now. Yes she believes in things like homosexuality is wrong but she has been brainwashed and can only live by what is in the bible. I know people get angry with them for their beliefs, I did but when you understand why they think that you don't feel so annoyed with them. I find it very sad really.
Not sure how someone can be sweet and homophobic at the same time.

I got one too, quite an intrusive policy in the middle of a pandemic to receive a handwritten and completely unsolicited letter.
HHSchultz · 07/05/2021 14:38

Steeling,** she isn't homophobic.

Steelix · 07/05/2021 14:49

@HHSchultz

Steeling,** she isn't homophobic.
You said she believes homosexuality is wrong.
Sceptre86 · 07/05/2021 14:53

We actually received a letter for dh and I today. I read mine, the penmanship was nice but seeing as I'm muslim and have no desire to convert the letter went in the bin.

HHSchultz · 07/05/2021 14:57

Steelix, no she isn't homophobic, she has no fear or dislike of Gay people.

Steelix · 07/05/2021 16:10

Just thinks they are inherently wrong. Right then.
HHSchultz · 07/05/2021 17:26

No she doesn't think the person is inherently wrong, she thinks the act is wrong, if they actually act on it.

Steelix · 07/05/2021 19:09

That's still homophobic, I really don't see how you can claim otherwise.

HHSchultz · 07/05/2021 19:28

I just don't think I could say she is homophobic. Not literally anyway. She has been indoctrinated by a Cult and can not think anything other than she has been told to.

HHSchultz · 07/05/2021 19:32

I did think exactly like you at first but the more I got to know her and know her religion I developed a different opinion.

Steelix · 07/05/2021 19:35

I've met people who've been indoctrinated into being racist, but they're still racist.

HHSchultz · 07/05/2021 19:52

I suppose it might come down to what you think homophobic really means.

Captpike · 07/05/2021 20:18

To me someone who thanks that same-sex relationships are somehow lesser and that homosexuality is wrong is homophobic. Seems obvious. But maybe I'm just being over sensitive since, you know, it's something I've had to deal with with most of my adolescent and adult life, including people making excuses for it.
HHSchultz · 07/05/2021 20:50

No I don't think you are over sensitive. My best friend of 30 years is a lesbian so I do understand a tiny bit of what you are saying. I have been on the receiving end of some questionable things myself in terms of prejudice when we have been out or away together over the years. I probably am not able to articulate it very well but if you met my JW friend I think you would see she wasn't homophobic.

Steelix · 08/05/2021 10:21

Lol 'I'm not homophobic, I have a gay friend'. I've heard it all before.

If your friend thinks that homosexuality is wrong she is homophobic.

Absolutely this. If you're oversensitive, then so am I.

cabbageking · 08/05/2021 10:50

They have been letter writing since March 2020 and their meetings and conventions have been on line 're Covid restrictions.
