If you won the lottery...

Would you go public or stay private? Just daydreaming about how I’d spend it if I won and I can’t decide which I would pick!

Private . A hundred percent.

Go public and all sorts come crawling out of the woodwork ...

CormoranStrike · 06/05/2021 14:54

Private - to a degree.

If I was going to be noticeably spending more I would declare myself a modest winner, enough to explain an new car or holiday, but never let on if I had millions.

Sunny4876 · 06/05/2021 14:55

Private definitely, couldn't deal with being treated differently and the begging letters, would give money to locals and charities I choose.

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 06/05/2021 14:56

Private. I'd maybe say that I'd won enough not to work and to buy a house but I wouldn't let on how much I'd actually got.

TechnoDino · 06/05/2021 14:58

Private. Friend’s parents won (huge) and have lost friends over it and developed anxiety issues.

Mammymar · 06/05/2021 15:04

Private because I wouldn't want to feel obligated to help our certain family members who haven't supported me over the years.

HollowTalk · 06/05/2021 15:05

That might be a good reason to go public, @Mammymar!

Deathraystare · 06/05/2021 15:06

Private deffo. Though of course I would see family and friends do all right!

MoxFulder · 06/05/2021 15:07

Private. I wouldn't want to be treated differently, and one part of my (shiftless lazy benefit frauding) family would come begging.

I'd probably only tell my parents and a couple of close friends, who I would want to give some money to.

MoxFulder · 06/05/2021 15:07

Exactly.

grapewine · 06/05/2021 15:07

Private. No question. We've had significant wins in the extended family. There was much entitlement from distant relatives who felt they were owed help.

CornishGem1975 · 06/05/2021 15:10

I'd want to be private but when I bought my big mansion and fleet of fancy cars, it would probably be obvious.

CluelessHamster · 06/05/2021 15:12

Private. Wouldn't tell a soul. Got it all worked out!

Private.
Maybe my parents, but nobody else. I have spent many many hours planning how to spend my Money without anyone knowing.

Bells3032 · 06/05/2021 15:33

Private. Only tell siblings and parents. obv some people might suspect but wouldn't say i'd quit my job or anything. I would quit though and go back to uni to train in museum curation.

Wouldn't move house yet either. maybe in a few years once my kids are in the good school near me

Longdistance · 06/05/2021 15:34

Private.

The only thing left by my office desk and swivel seat would be tumbleweed 🏃‍♀️ 💨

Strokethefurrywall · 06/05/2021 15:35

Private - same as if a personal business was hugely successful. I’d never disclose how much (unless that business was public in which case general knowledge), because folk often assume you’ll help them out.
That being said I have a wonderful family whom I’d want to help!

Fitforforty · 06/05/2021 15:38

I’ve put far too much thought into this as someone who doesn’t really play the lottery. I would find out how much I would have won if it was a lesser prize and tell people I have won 5 ball and the bonus ball rather than the jackpot.

HerRoyalNotness · 06/05/2021 15:40

Private sand those who noticed improved circumstances “an investment that paid off”

ElGuardiandenoche · 06/05/2021 15:42

Private. Depending on how much we won I’m afraid I’d be getting us sorted as a priority as we are renting and are at the age where we wouldn’t get a mortgage for long enough to buy a house. Also I’d buy a new wheelchair accessible vehicle as ours is 1999 and is showing it’s age.

Then if we had a little more I’d invest it for our retirement.

Next priority after that is making sure my three kids are sorted.

Then parents, siblings and maybe a couple of friends.

Devlesko · 06/05/2021 15:43

Unlikely as I don't do it.
However, I'd make sure friends family and the charities I like to support got a fair share.
I'd tell a white lie and say it was an investment that had paid out.
I'd tell dh and the kids the truth, that would be all.

Alfiemoon1 · 06/05/2021 15:45

Private definitely

AnnaSW1 · 06/05/2021 15:46

Private! My OH's family are money grabbing enough as it is!

AnExcellentWalker · 06/05/2021 15:52

Private. I used to know someone who had won an enormous sum of money, not on the lottery, they sadly lost most of their friends as most of them apparently came begging for money within a few weeks. It made them very cynical & isolated, & they moved away.
