Snowdonia question for keen hikers

lastqueenofscotland · 05/05/2021 15:30

Hopefully me and DP will be able to get a long weekend in north Wales soon.
We have a snowdon day planned but looking for recommendations for other walks/hills to slog up.
Technically both very capable and fit but i don’t like ridges so Crib Goch is a no from me.

Basic scrambling is fine (hand on rock stuff) but nothing too hairy ideally.
Any ideas?

Cadair Idris is great. You can see Barmouth from the top on a clear day.

takemetomiami · 05/05/2021 15:33

And I hate heights so there was definitely nothing too hairy!

Do the Snowdon South ridge - usually very quiet, a little bit of marrow (but not exposed ridge). One of my favourite walks.

Thank you for that! Do you know which path you took up cader Idris?

Thank you also for the south ridge recommendation I’d not researched it due to reading the word ridge but had had a look and it’s hardly sharp edge is it! May have to alter our planned snowdon route for that one

We took the Minffordd path, there's a car park and it's a steep path up the side of a stream (all signposted)

Book your Snowdon parking in advance, the car parks fill up fast and the police are again towing away cars parked all over the place.
I'd park away from the starts of the paths and use the park and ride.

Tryfan might be worth a look. If you go up from the back it’s not too bad, a couple points of exposure but nothing like as bad as Crib Goch. The front way up looks terrifying though!

Nearby is the Carnedd Llewellyn/Dafyd ridge, not at all scary but we had to turn round due to bad weather so never quite made it all the way.

Cadair Idris as mentioned is good, there is a very easy shallow way up that I’ve ridden on my mtb.

Mol Seobod (spelling?) is good if you want a bit of a scramble but without ridges.

Lonelycrab · 06/05/2021 17:13

Oh and personally I think Snowdon itself will be absolutely rammed this year. It’s pretty busy anyway but I think it will be crazy this year for obvious reasons. For me when it gets that busy it really takes the charm away. I’d expect hundreds at the summit on a nice day. Just my 2p

Scarby9 · 06/05/2021 17:13

I think Tryfan is very doable, and fits your not Crib Gogh but scrambling ok criteria.

murbblurb · 06/05/2021 17:15

Snowdon is almost guaranteed to cloud in and will be horribly busy. Try Moel famau and the clywydians, not as high but lots of great walking and views. Better weather generally.

Another vote for Tryfan and the Ogwen valley in general.

MissHoney85 · 06/05/2021 17:17

Another vote for Tryfan. You can combine it with Bristly Ridge if you want a full day out. Bristly Ridge is a bit more technical in places but has some cool rocks at the top.

The Carneddau are also good and tend to be less busy. Crib Lem has some decent but not too challenging scrambling.

Dh and his friend walked up last month, They parked in Rhyd Ddu car park and went up a different way that the usual path from Llanberis. Dh said it was really quiet and lovely and they could see the other paths at different points and they were quite busy.

The devils kitchen route from llyn Idwal is very fun you can make your way up the glyders from there or y garn. Avid mountain climber and y garn is one of my faves so far. Fantastic views of Tryfan, snowdon and the carneddaus

Themadcatparade · 07/05/2021 10:19

Moel Siabod is next on our list too!
