Do you know your blood type?

DH didn’t have a clue but had a blood test at the GP today so asked in passing and was told they don’t have it on your digital records and despite having had two operations last year they don’t know. He’d never thought to ask anyone before.

I always thought mine was the same as both my parents, found out from some paperwork before a surgery it was different.

Neither of us can give blood but maybe if you can you know through that?

We are all different in this house.

I am O- and found out during pregnancy.

DH is AB- found out after giving blood.

DS is B- and DD is A- both found after birth to check if I required an anti-d injection.

DD1 (different father) is O+

WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 26/07/2021 21:08

I only found out when I was pregnant but I've forgotten it now!

Kids are A+

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2021 21:17

O+, found out on my 18th birthday, the first time I gave blood.

TheWashingMachine · 26/07/2021 21:22

I'm O so is DS. DH and DD are both A. My dad is O and my mum is A.

Egghead68 · 26/07/2021 21:24

A+ found out from donating blood

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/07/2021 21:29

O+, I found out when I started giving blood. My donor card states it, and I have it on a pin badge somewhere.

delilahbucket · 26/07/2021 21:32

Only found out mine through being pregnant. As far as I am aware the only reasons they will check it is pregnancy and blood donation unless you have a medical condition that requires them to know.

LoveFall · 26/07/2021 21:34

@StewardsEnquiry

It is tested each time you might need a transfusion as a double check. Imagine if there was a mistake on some central data base and you got the wrong kind? Or you had a common name? It would be a catastrophe. Plus, each time you have a transfusion you stand the chance of developing rare antibodies that they also check for.

Your GP does not hold your blood type because they have no reason to know it. They would never ever be giving you a transfusion.

As far as I know they do a cross match to check compatibility before a transfusion. Or use O-, the so called "universal donor."

I found out my blood type when I donated blood

Hellvelyn · 26/07/2021 23:50

I am B+ and found out from donating blood. Both my parents are O so I was a bit bemused. My beloved grandfather passed away recently aged 102. I found his blood donation card. He was a B+ too. I'm ridiculously pleased as feel like I have a special link to him.

Katefoster · 27/07/2021 07:04

I'm thought I was the universal one but im sure I saw on my mat notes that it said B something. I'll have to check!

Noshowwithoutpunch · 27/07/2021 07:10

Found out from my maternity notes. O+

FreeBritnee · 27/07/2021 07:11

It’s so weird we don’t know this information! I know mine because of donating blood. I know one of my children’s because of being rhesus negative and they were positive. I can only guess at my other child’s because they are also rhesus negative and due to the first child having a different blood group to me we can work out DPs more or less. Fucking ridiculous though. When we tried to find out DPs they basically didn’t offer that service and they refused to tell me my second child’s blood group when I asked 🙄🙄🙄

Why the secrecy?!!!

Seasidemumma77 · 27/07/2021 07:57

My parents and brothers all A- and I'm B+. My for dc are O+ AB- AB+ AB+

mikeyboo · 27/07/2021 08:18

Hellvelyn - if you are B(+/-) it’s not possible both your biological parents are group O. People with a type O phenotype can only have the OO genotype and therefore have no B to pass down.

If one of your parents was group O the other must have been either group AB (genotype AB) or group B (genotype BB or OB).

🙈

I can remember causing quite the awkward silence when I said my son couldnt possibly be the blood group he was as I wasn’t that blood group. The nurse assumed she’d let the cat out of the bag in terms of who the father was (or wasnt) and as my DP was in the room you could hear a pin drop. Perhaps that’s why they keep this stuff under wraps 🥴

Clymene · 27/07/2021 08:37

You've obviously misunderstood your blood group or your DP's then @FreeBritnee.

I'm B+. I'm a blood donor so it's on your card.

Anonapapple · 27/07/2021 08:42

AB+
I found out when I moved to a country that routinely tested for everyone's blood type to put on their medical card.

FreeBritnee · 27/07/2021 08:54

I know my sons blood group but I’d made them assumption that both me and DP shared the same blood group so when I heard that my child was a completely random letter I freaked out. Obviously DP must also be that completely random letter lol. He has never been told!
littleredberries · 27/07/2021 09:25

A-, found out through pregnancy. DH gave blood to get his tested, he is O+. So we did a foetal test to see whether rhesus products were necessary, which they were because DD is A+.

Oldraver · 27/07/2021 10:19

I live the Blood people telling me where my blood had gone, each time it's a new place

The quickest was one Christmas, gave blood on the Friday, Christmas Day Monday and my blood was issued the following Friday

Roomonb · 27/07/2021 10:25

Found mine out because it had to go on my ID card when I moved country (then its on a national database). Very sensible if you ask me in case of an emergency.

drspouse · 27/07/2021 10:26

I do and likewise only from giving blood (though I've had no major operations).
I imagine that people might tell them wrong, by accident, but it would seem worth keeping on file. I'm O- so in demand for blood donation.

Oldraver · 27/07/2021 10:31

My most recent one was 9 days from arm to hospital
