Do you know your blood type?

DH didn’t have a clue but had a blood test at the GP today so asked in passing and was told they don’t have it on your digital records and despite having had two operations last year they don’t know. He’d never thought to ask anyone before.

I always thought mine was the same as both my parents, found out from some paperwork before a surgery it was different.

Neither of us can give blood but maybe if you can you know through that?

Regular blood donor, so I have known since I was 18. My 50th donation is due in about 6 weeks, all being well.

WhateverJohnnyMcNofriends · 05/05/2021 23:47

I'm A- I found out when I first donated blood when I was 19.
I did try to donate platelets but I don't have the right veins apparently 🤷🏼‍♀️

I can't donate anymore because of the medication I'm onSad

MrsClatterbuck · 05/05/2021 23:52

I know from giving blood. B+ but my mum is AB- which is quite rare I believe.

I found mine out when donating blood, B+ same with my husband who is AB+, don’t know what our kids are though.

SionnachRua · 05/05/2021 23:54

Yup, regular blood donor here. I'd be ashamed to not do it given that I'm fit and healthy. In months or years to come I might well need blood myself.

Those of us who have crappy blood and can’t are grateful Smile

Maybe women know more than men because lots of us have kids and they check it then in case jaundice risk.

I think I was A-.

had to have some jabs when Pg because of it.

Disclaimer- woolly memory!

Just asked dh he has no idea

SpringSparrow · 05/05/2021 23:59

I know mine as well through donating blood. When you donate blood, you are given a credit card sized card with your blood donor details on it. Also have been given a couple of key rings with my blood group on.

I am AB -ve which is supposed to be rare but I knew as a teenager we always knew from a young age (not from Uk). Not one else in my family had -ve group so it was a surprise.

Floralnomad · 06/05/2021 00:12

I’m B - found out when I needed a blood transfusion , I can’t give blood myself . Dh is 0 - , he found out through donating . .

Nat6999 · 06/05/2021 00:58

I'm A+, found out when I gave blood years ago, can't donate now as I received a blood transfusion without consent after PPH when having ds. Ds sent off for a kit to find out what blood group he was.

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2021 01:02

I'm O+, found out as a blood donor. DH is also O+ so I expect all our DC are too, though I don't know for sure.

Notthatmuchroyalist · 06/05/2021 01:05

A+. I think I had to find out when I spent time abroad decades ago. Wierdly just today was sorting out a drawer and came across a laminated card with it on.

SaturdayRocks · 06/05/2021 01:10

Type O.

Oh?

Blatant Some Like It Hot reference.

I know which type I am as I’m a blood donor.

MouseholeCat · 06/05/2021 01:17

Yes! I found out mine from giving blood. My husband doesn't know his though.

Frustratingly I can't give blood anymore because I'm in the US and they won't accept blood from anyone who lived in the UK between 1980 and 1997 due to vCJD.

@Linnet I've had two children (in England) in the last three years - neither tested for their blood group at birth. Where/when did that happen?

I think it happened the day after they were born, certainly with dd1 it must have been a day or two later, I remember the midwife coming in and saying baby has the same blood group as you. Then with dd2 she was born at around 5pm the next morning the midwife came in and told me that her blood group was O neg which I was expecting since dh and I are both O neg.

It’s possible that they only checked their blood because I’m negative and they they check the babies in case they are positive as this can cause problems. But we knew they would be negative because dh and I are both negative. I’m in Scotland so don’t know if it’s different here.

They get tested if you are a Rhesus negative mother. This is in case you have had a rhesus positive baby and then the mother may need an anti-d injection. I had 2 children as a Rh- mother and got anti- d after each birth (dh is Rh+)

bluebluezoo · 06/05/2021 08:25

If you are rh- they will blood test the baby as a rh+ baby can have serious consequences for subsequent pregnancies. Mum can develop antibodies to rh+ so the next pregnancy, if rh+, will be seen by mum as “foreign” and will likely miscarry.

If you are rh+ there is no need as your body already recognises rh+ so won’t attack it.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 06/05/2021 08:25

I found out mine when I was pregnant. B+
I can't give blood though as I recieved a transfusion after a PPH.

Groovee · 06/05/2021 08:27

Found out when I was pregnant that I was O+. Dd is the same as she found out when giving blood. Dh is A+ which his mum knew. We have no idea about Ds.

StCharlotte · 06/05/2021 08:33

Found out through giving blood. A+. Probably the only A+ I've ever had in my life Grin

HowToBringABlushToTheSnow · 06/05/2021 08:38

I knew mine from years ago but DH and I had to provide proof of ours as we are having a baby via a donor egg, they like to try and match the blood types with the donor.

Kinsters · 06/05/2021 08:40

AnneLovesGilbert you'd only be questioning paternity if it was the other way around - parents group O and you group A.

I found out mine when I was pregnant. I think my mum had told me when I was younger but I'd forgotten. O+ just like my husband and just like our DD.
