Breaking Bad OR Orange is Black will I like them?

Need something to get into. Which one?

What else do you like? Breaking Bad is brilliant but it's dark, suspenseful/stressful and has quite explicit violence. OITNB is also brilliant, but it's raw and gritty and has a lot of explicit sex (not everyone's cup of tea).

Both have humour and very sharp writing but OITNB is lighter and more humorous overall than BB, and I enjoyed the female perspectives as well as the many varied life stories of the prisoners.

Flipflopblowout · 05/05/2021 14:09

I liked them both but I don't that this is any kind of recommendation.

BettyUnderswoob · 05/05/2021 14:15

Haven't seen OITNB, but loved Breaking Bad. Wish I could erase it from my mind and watch it anew again!

Breaking Bad, definitely.

Aposterhasnoname · 05/05/2021 14:17

Breaking bad is the best thing on tv ever. I can’t say how much I loved it, and how surprised I was, as it’s really not my usual thing.

Fyredraca · 05/05/2021 14:29

I loved OITNB, so many excellent three dimensional characters. You get to know them through the progress of the series and hardly any of them are all bad or all good. When you realise how they have lived you understand why they are there and wonder if you would have done any better in their shoes.
I cried my eyes out on the last episode. It was so touching.
Breaking Bad is very good but it doesn't have heart like OITNB.

frugalforager · 05/05/2021 14:35

Binge watched BB in my first pregnancy and OITNB in my second. Loved them both and wish I could go back and watch both for the first time again. They're very different but both brilliant.

Thursa · 05/05/2021 16:26

I loved OITNB, but couldn’t get into BB at all.

PatrickBatemann · 05/05/2021 16:34

Breaking Bad is absolutely fantastic; the writing and plot is incredible.

We just got a new kitten and named him after one of the main characters, actually Grin

AuntieMarys · 05/05/2021 16:38

Both are fantastic. The soundtrack to OUTNB is stunning.

Moooooooooooooooooo · 05/05/2021 17:47

Loved, loved, loved OITNB. Watch it.

Slub · 05/05/2021 18:59

Breaking Bad for sure.
Too much sex on OIYNB for me but whatever floats your lesbian boat. Plus it got boring by Season 4.

Sunshine1235 · 05/05/2021 19:16

BB for sure, it’s excellent the whole way through too which is a rarity in tv series I find.

@PatrickBatemann what did you call the kitten?

GloomyWaters · 05/05/2021 20:13

So I started BB .... half way through 1st episode and not captured me. Will go back to it though as so many of you have raved about it

So started OITNB and quite enjoyed 1st episode think it was because so many characters etc

ipswichwitch · 05/05/2021 20:15

PatrickBateman tell me you called your kitten Hank!!

mrsed1987 · 05/05/2021 20:36

I've watched both and 100% recommend sticking with breaking bad. I actually didn't rate the first few episodes but soon got in to it and got to say one of the best things I've watched.

OITNB is really good aswell though

ILoveMondayMornings · 05/05/2021 20:45

I got bored of OITNB by season 3. It seemed to be the same thing over and over.

Breaking bad is fantastic - but the first 3 episodes aren't exciting ... but its worth it. Brilliant series.

Mol1628 · 05/05/2021 20:46

Definitely both. OITNB first. Yes it can be explicit and a bit OTT sometimes but the characters and acting is just so good.

Then breaking bad followed by better call Saul. Also amazing

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 05/05/2021 20:47

Ive watched orange a few times now

Only just got into breaking bad last month, not completely sure id be in a hurry to watch it again...but i did think it was really good

GreenLeafTurnip · 05/05/2021 20:54

Breaking bad. I started orange is the new black but I just couldn't get on with the main character she was so whiny. Love Walt!!

Deena07 · 05/05/2021 20:57

I didn't watch much of either.

My partner, brother and work colleagues, were all raving about Breaking Bad, but they said it takes a while to get going, I watched a few episodes and decided it wasn't for me. Similar situation to Orange is the new black.

But if you are looking for something to watch which is a little dark yet entertaining thriller and you haven't already watched it - which you may have done as it was released in the UK in 2007 and was available on Netflix for quite a while. Then I highly recommend Dexter - I absolutely loved it (except series 8 was disappointing) but they are currently creating a new series and I can't wait for it to come back! You can't help but love the main character who is pretty twisted. Not sure where you can watch it now, but I would imagine it wouldn't be too expensive to purchase the whole 8 series or I think it is currently on Sky and Now TV if you have either of them.

You may also find Grimm, which is another American crime drama, but with fantasy involved, I'm not a huge fantasy lover but was gripped with Grimm, I can't remember why we stopped watching it to be honest, but we got quite far in. Another fairly old one you may have seen, as it was released in the UK in early 2012. Not sure where you can watch it now though, another one that was removed from Netflix.

I'm quite enjoying Perception on Disney+ Star at the moment, it is a very light crime drama, with the main character who helps a federal government solve complex cases. I'm sad to see that there was only 3 series though with only 39 episodes.

I also started The Flight Attendant, which I need to finish, which is pretty decent so far, from what I have seen, but only 9 episodes have been released so far which is all of series 1.

Sorry @GloomyWaters not exactly answering your question, but thought I'd recommend some others you may like, if you are able to watch them and haven't already seen them.

I hope you can get into a series that grips your attention Smile

idontlikealdi · 05/05/2021 21:12

Couldn't get on with either of them so have up.

teddybears55 · 05/05/2021 21:14

Breaking bad is brilliant probably best box set I've ever watched and I've watched a lot!

OINB I've been watching on and off for years now I'm still mega behind, it isnt gripping like breaking bad. I'd often stay up way too late when I had work the next day but I cldnt not see the next episode. Binged watched it all over a few weeks, I'd love to watch it again actually been a gd few yrs since I saw it now!

PineappleCakes · 05/05/2021 21:21

Not ever watched OITNB so no opinion.

But Breaking Bad is excellent - it does take a couple of episodes to get into it and if you're not hooked after the episode with the bath, then it's probably not for you.

Once you're done with Breaking Bad, try Better Call Saul. That is much lighter but still superb, and I actually find him to be a likeable character unlike any of the BB cast (expect maybe Junior).

PatrickBatemann · 05/05/2021 21:46

@Sunshine1235

BB for sure, it’s excellent the whole way through too which is a rarity in tv series I find.

@PatrickBatemann what did you call the kitten?

Jesse!
