Is this meant to be our summer?

OP posts:

'Translation - keep your coat on until the hawthorn (may) is in bloom (which means it's warm enough to risk leaving it at home)'

Here is a photo of our hawthorn in bloom in the snow 2 weeks ago. It is hard to tell what is blossom and what is snow. I think I will be keeping my coat on a bit longer.

But it's beginning of May. Not summer yet. It also rains all June here in rainy Manchester

ThomasHardyPerennial · 04/05/2021 12:28

When do you think spring is, op?

ChrissyPlummer · 04/05/2021 12:29

It’s bloody awful (NW England). Throwing it down and blowing a Gale. Can’t we just have consistently nice weather for once? It’s so miserable and cold again. I’m actually contemplating putting my thermals on for work later. Ridiculous in May.

Orangebug · 04/05/2021 12:29

Here we've had no rain (until a bit yesterday and today) for the past month!

ElaborateSalad · 04/05/2021 12:32

I was really looking forward to getting away in our caravan this weekend, but the weather is just too awful. I won't get another chance until the end of the month, and I already feel that summer is slipping away from me.

We've had two sunny days this year and I've been working 12hr shifts for both of them.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 04/05/2021 12:34

It’s spring. The last few days have been wet where I am but prior to that we’ve had weeks and weeks of dry weather, no rain at all or very short showers that do nothing in terms of watering crops and gardens. Farmers have had problems with the dryness causing delays to their growing season this year (both in terms of food production for people and feed for livestock).

@faithfulbird20

Is this meant to be our summer?
Nope, nobody claims May is Summer. It's a bit chillier than I might expect in late Spring but not that bad.

We need more rain here (Kent), it's been ludicrously dry and garden is suffering.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 04/05/2021 13:13

I can understand the rain, as it’s been so dry, but I don’t see why it has to be so cold and windy. I’d be happy if it rained overnight and was springlike during the day.

LST · 04/05/2021 13:15

Yep. Ruined our camping plans. We had to come home early.

Exactly! Selfish bloody weather
steppemum · 04/05/2021 13:27

first proper rain for weeks.
relieved that I don't need to get the hose out.

I am fed up of the cold, it has been very cold here for weeks.

HappyRaven · 04/05/2021 13:32

What happened to April showers? I can't remember it raining very much at all. We definitely needed the rain but not the wind, that was supposed to be in March.

ichundich · 04/05/2021 13:36

a) It's currently spring, not summer. Summer starts on 21 June.
b) It has rained for less than a day. Maybe take a walk over your local fields / park and see the cracks in the soil that have appeared due to the persistent lack of rain over March and April.

wendz86 · 04/05/2021 13:40

Hasn’t rained here for weeks . Yesterday /today first in a while . I’m fed up with it being cold though .

Jocasta2018 · 04/05/2021 13:41

I'm in the SE & my garden desperately needs the rain so the more the merrier!

murbblurb · 04/05/2021 13:42

First rain in a month for much of England. Where do you live, op?

Miseryl · 04/05/2021 14:01

Yes fed up with the wind, rain and cold. ☹️

Tambora · 04/05/2021 14:03

@faithfulbird20

Is this meant to be our summer?
No. It's spring.
namesnamesnamesnames · 04/05/2021 14:07

We have had so little rain here. Even yesterday and today. Just keeps blowing over.

minniemomo · 04/05/2021 14:09

We only had about 12 hours of rain, it's been really dry!

SpaceRaiders · 04/05/2021 14:13

I don’t begrudge the rain, it’s the wind and cold I can’t stand.

It was ridiculous a couple of weeks back, I left the house at 9 am in heavy snow fall and it was 18 degrees and sunny by late afternoon.

Iamthewombat · 04/05/2021 14:14

Spring is supposed to be rainy. Even Chaucer knew that when he wrote the prologue to the Canterbury Tales. We are getting the ‘shoures sweet’ of ‘that Aprill’ a bit later than normal, that’s all!

bigbluebus · 04/05/2021 14:27

Don't mind the rain so much as we need it - the ground is cracking here it's so dry - but the wind and the cold us just too much. Our boiler packed up on Friday night so we've had no heating or hot water until about 1 hour ago!

Tal45 · 04/05/2021 16:33

We had such a bleddy good spring last year - BBQ's every other day through April and May - that this years feels like a right let down. It's so cold, gale force winds and rain over the bank holiday and we can't even go abroad to escape it.
