South Manchester is nicer. Cheshire border so Didsbury area, Altrincham, and Sale.

Unless there's some reason you need to be the other end, as north to south is a fair distance.

Sale and Altrincham have a tram system straight into the city centre. They run roughly every 10 mins or so and are not expensive. Didsbury has train and buses running constantly.
There's good schools in all 3 and close access to entertainment, nice local shops and not far from parks and greens. Sale and Altrincham most leafy and didsbury a little more built up.

Saying that if you prefer north, my sister lives in Bury and finds it a nice place to live too. Has no children however so I'm not aware of facilities
