Hole in one shoe - does this happen to anyone else

I have a pair of shoes. They are my every day shoes. They are a little bit over one year old. I like to buy mens ecco shoes because they are comfortable and durable. It probably is time to buy a new pair of shoes after so long. Thing is my shoes are in good shape and they are still comfortable. There is a problem.

One show has a hole in the show where the ball of the foot usually is. It's just one shoe. This has been happening for years in every pair of shoes I own and have, after a while a hole delevlops inside of the shoe usually where the ball of the foot is.

I don't understand how it happens. I will take a picture and come back. Just wondering does this happen to anyone else.

This only ever happens on one side of a pair of shoes. Always on my right side.

Do you drive in them?

GreenFairyHouse · 03/05/2021 16:18

They ate about 16 months old. I was hoping to get another few more months out of them but sadly not.

I don't drive so I don't drive in them.

I always wear out my left shoe first, and on the ball of the foot too. I think I must walk a bit lopsided!

ChatterMonkey · 03/05/2021 16:20

It will be to do with the balance of you walking. Do you carry a handbag on your right shoulder or hand? The way you twist slightly to account for extra weight on one side might mean you are walking heavier on your right side?

My bro used to go through his left knee and right elbow in everything. Often he'd be wearing thin in them after only 2-3 weeks. Dm got to the point she used to patch them with leather inside before he wore them.

Do you have a corresponding lump of hard skin on the ball of your foot in that position which could be wearing away the insole of your shoe? It could be worth googling 'dropped metatarsal' which I think is when one foot bone is below the level of the others. But I could be completely wrong as I just read about it years ago.

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 03/05/2021 16:32

You obviously walk more heavily on the right side than the left and push off each stride with the ball of your right foot. It’s your gait.

Nobody’s shoes wear evenly. Why don’t you get your shoes re soled before they wear out?

Homemadearmy · 03/05/2021 16:44

My son does exactly the same, top of the shoes would be immaculate and there would be 10p sized Hope in the sole

Homemadearmy · 03/05/2021 16:44

Hole not hope

I do have hard skin right there too. I always get holes in my socks in that position too. I hated the idea of holey socks and throwing away holey socks and having odd socks and wasting a pair of socks. So I addressed the issue years ago by buying the same type of socks - white trainers socks so when I get holes, I can always have a pair of socks.

Over the past year, I started to wear woollen socks because they are thicker. I am hoping they will provide more cushioning to the sole of the foot. So far its going well with my woollen socks and no holes are appearing yet.

I do carry a handbag on the right side of my body.

I had a big toe hole like that in just one of a pair of trainers I wore for years - the insole was quite thick foam and it went right through.
Can’t remember now which one, and I don’t walk as much now so no current shoes have the same thing, but might well have been shoulder-bag side.

FOJN · 03/05/2021 16:54

Is the hole just inside the shoe or does it start on the sole and wear through to the inside? You could try having new soles put on when the shoes are new or putting a replaceable insole inside to help get longer wear out of them.

GreenFairyHouse · 03/05/2021 17:22

The hole starts on the inside and worked downwards but it didn't reach the sole.

If the rest of the shoe is still ok, just replace the insoles.

Hi, this thread has been quiet for ages but my daughter (14) is experiencing the same thing - although she has holes in both shoes appearing under her heels quite quickly - 2 months in new school shoes. I thought it was faulty shoes until the same pattern keeps being repeated and then I found this post and know we’re not alone. Did you come to the conclusion that the answer is to just buy insoles that can be replaced to prolong shoe life? Thanks
