Inspired by all the LOD disappointment - tell me which shows ended well

My social media is completely full of people complaining that the end of Line of Duty was either rushed or rubbish or both. Same happened with Game of Thrones.

So, which series actually had a strong, satisfying end?

OP posts:

The middle

I both loved and hated The Big Bang Theory ending. Loved the ending in relation to Sheldon's story arc & found last episode very emotional. But like PP I was also so cross about Penny's storyline and, possibly even more so, with Amy's makeover.

Mendeleyev · 03/05/2021 14:59

Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes. Loved the ending and thought it was perfect. I was waiting to be disappointed as I loved the series but it ended brilliantly

Not a major series but I thought the ending of Dark was great.

Also, controversial, but I did not have a problem with the ending of GoT. In terms of what happened to the major characters, I couldn't see it going any other way, though I know many disagreed!

bonfireheart · 03/05/2021 15:06

My fave was The Office US.

dreamingbohemian · 03/05/2021 15:07

I'm not sure you can beat the Six Feet Under ending. It was such a clever way to end, and so emotional -- when David sees young Keith playing football in the sun, good lord.

I really disliked the last season of the Americans but the final couple episodes were amazing.

Ghostlyfeet · 03/05/2021 15:07

The Shield- I was devastated at the end. The series was sooooo good and the end was perfect but I just didn't want it to be over!!!
Also Buffy and I think The West Wing had a good ending too.

Hustle - loved how they brought all the old characters back

Blackadder - WWI when they all went over the top. Not sure it can be described as ‘ending well’ but it was superb ending.

Standrewsschool · 03/05/2021 15:10

@HoldingForGeneralHugs

I just watched the alternative ending to HIMYM and i much prefer it! I cant believe they didnt go with that one!

I agree GOT was so disappointing all that time invested and it was so anticlimatic.

Im a bit torn about how Supernatural ended wasnt the ending i would have chosen

Even thought you know its going to happen the ending to Merlin is so sad (im soppy) and i wish it had ended differently

Where can you view the alternative? The last episode was definitely disappointing, and didn’t conform with the title of the show!
Turtles4543 · 03/05/2021 15:11

The Affair

Ylfa · 03/05/2021 15:13

Breaking Bad

I think The Killing is the best example of how to go from utterly amazing to complete and utter shit in just three seasons. Unfortunately I can only think of disappointing endings like Dexter and Lost.

I also didn't mind the ending of GoT as much as most people. It was rushed but it mostly made sense (except for Bran, which was completely dumb).

@Stoptalkingtome

The Mentalist had a lovely ending imo.

Got wind of the HIMYM ending and refused to watch the rest of the series on principle. Had watched them all up until that point.

I hate sad or open ended endings to things. Love a flash forward into future character lives.

I refused to watch the last two eps of HIMYM after being heavily invested in the show! In my mind that ending never happened.

Good endings: sex and the city (tv show) was perfect in my opinion.

Allbymyself1 · 03/05/2021 15:27

Complete opposite Mendeleyev!
I was so excited for the last episode of Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes, waited impatiently for it all week then was absolutely gutted at the ending!
So disappointed, I think I raged at anyone who would listen for the next year about how awful I thought the last episode was!

Timeandtune · 03/05/2021 15:34

Definitely Spiral. Satisfying. Loose ends tied up and hopeful. Also Call My Agent.

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 03/05/2021 15:36

@bonfireheart

My fave was The Office US.
Yes this was great. So happy that Michael reappeared.
MotherOfGodWeeFella · 03/05/2021 15:37

You beat me to it with Spiral @Timeandtune

AnneShirleysNewDress · 03/05/2021 15:39

How to get away with murder and Blackadder are the only 2 I can think of that were done well. The ending of HIMYM still ranks as the worst for me.

RachelRaven · 03/05/2021 15:40

@Standrewsschool ive put a link on page one.

HildegardeCrowe · 03/05/2021 15:43

The Bridge. When she answers her phone at the end and says Saga Noren and not Saga Noren Lanskrim Malmö I was sobbing. Utterly perfect.

Bopahula · 03/05/2021 15:43

Warehouse 13. Was a really good series on sci-fi, I thought they ended it perfectly.

I liked the ending to Downton too.

AliasGrape · 03/05/2021 15:45

I was gutted at the time but reflecting on it over the next few days I thought it made complete sense for the characters to end up where they did. It just wasn’t particularly satisfying.

In the same respect I think the Line Of Duty ending was pretty realistic - they were always up against the entire weight of the system that didn’t really want to confront reality, and that in the end it wasn’t some hugely shocking clever twist but an incompetent, self-serving fuckwit in it for the money and a system determined to look the other way for an easy life. ( I’ve seen more than one comparison with Boris Johnson on Twitter Grin along with a tweet along the lines of maybe Mercurio will give us the ending we really want when we start holding our real life corrupt public officials to account). But again it wasn’t narratively particularly satisfying and was distinctly lacking in fan service.

I wonder if it’s going to be a trend in big shows - to give a realistic if somewhat disappointing ending? I hope not! I did say to DH that after the year we’ve had the country deserved a jaw dropper of a finale!

I’m struggling to think of answers to the question - I agree The Good Place and Schitt’s Creek ended really well. Also in comedy both The Office and Gavin and Stacey. I loved the ending to Life On Mars -was just right.

I never finished Six Feet Under, was in the days when you had to beg or borrow the dvds if you missed it live and I never got round to it. I might see if I can find it on streaming now.

cariadlet · 03/05/2021 15:48

Blackadder
Mash
Life on Mars
The Young Ones
Being Human
Peep Show
The Royle Family

I hated the endings for Friends and the Big Bang Theory.
I got cross that Rachel gave up her dream job in Paris, Penny shouldn't have got pregnant and the Nobel prize was ridiculous.
