What would happen in this situation? Car accident far from home.

This happened November 2019 and I often think of the couple involved and wonder what would have happened.

I was in a&e in a bed and a man in his 70s was next to me. From what I could gather, he and his wife had been in a car accident on their way on holiday. Car and caravan wrecked. His wife was in majors with some broken bones and head injury. He seemed to be ok. He was discharged before me but when I was discharged I saw him sat in the waiting room so I asked if he had someone coming to him. He said no, they were 3 hours from home, their son couldn't drive and he (the man) didn't have anywhere to go. He didn't know the city we were in. I left but have felt guilty ever since that I didn't help him somehow. What would have happened to him? Would somebody have helped him find a hotel or something??

OP, I used to work in car insurance. He would have been entitled to travel back home being paid for for him, including a hotel if needed (sounds like in this case it would have been) and I'm absolutely sure the hospital would have helped to guide him towards a hotel etc. Lovely of you to care 🙂

he would probably need to stay in the town til his wife was discharged from hospital.
assuming he had good insurance he would be able to get a courtesy car and eventually drive them both home.
i hope so anyway.
the person discharging him from A&E should have checked that he had somewhere to go, was clear what he was doing.
guess he was waiting to find out news of his wife.
