Hello all

I have a question and not sure what is right or not. I'm separating from my partner. I have 4 kids. Currently on UC and housing is part of the claim.

My father has a house that he does not live in and has paid off the mortgage. He has said I can move in there and not pay rent. This is very generous of him. I am needing to update universal credit of my change of circumstances. So when I give them my new address do I just say rent is £0. Will that be strange? I am working part time and will be able to cover most costs but will still need the basic payment from UC. Do I have to explain why my rent is £0 or will they just accept I'm not paying rent. My dad will not be living with me just me and my children.

Why would they not accept it? You'll be entitled to what you're entitled to.

I know. I mean do I just have to change my rent to £0 on my account. Do I have to give a reason why i am no longer paying rent. I'm not trying to get more money. I am happy that soon when I can up my hours I won't have to claim!

Just put £0
If they need more information they will request it.

That will be fine - obviously you know you can’t get help with housing if you live there anyway. So put that, then maybe just pop a note into your journal explaining and they will call if they have further questions.

Thanks all. Things have been difficult just don't need more trouble and probably over thinking things
