Findmypast has got all of the census info on free view this weekend. I really recommend having a noodle around. (It’s everything the censuses show from 1801 to 1911)

DH and I have been looking up our forebears and its been great fun piecing together what we’ve been told and what the census shows.

I’m proper peasant’ocracy - Occasional Agricultural Labourer and Maltsters Assistant are the most common occupations. DH come from a long line of Lead Miners. A few great names - Violet, Granite and Idris. Quite sobering about many children, how close together, how few rooms.

I don’t have a clear run as a lot of my family weren’t in the UK 100 years ago but its still hugely interesting. I really recommend having a go.

Found her. It doesn't show if she was skilled at pheasantry or cheese souffles or microbiology at such a tender age. That came when she'd left nursery school.

Thanks for this - I have Irish ancestors who came to England during the famine and they worked in the cotton mills of Manchester.

@TawnyPippit,

Thanks so much for the tip-off. Shall head over there right now!

BTW, I misread and was intrigued as to precisely what being a Malteser Assistant involved...
