As a teenager I like listening to a certain rock band.
Just found their album on iTunes, downloaded and listened.
I was shocked. One of the songs - sung by grown men - ' she's a 13 yr tease , with bleach blonde hair. Let me eat your cookies , let me see your cookies '
Sat in the bath gob smacked. When I was 15 , this never made me question.

Has anyone else come across something that as a younger person it never crossed your mind but now it's a wtf moment

They also had a sketch about an architect designing high-rise flats for less privileged people in the community and the 'joke' was that the architect naturally assumed his brief was to find a way of killing off the 'undesirable' people who would be housed there - building catching fire, flooding, basement full of starving crocodiles etc - rather than providing them with a safe (if not luxurious) place to live. The 'joke' was that he was incredulous to learn that the plan wasn't automatically to murder poorer folk. Hilarious, I'm sure - especially nowadays, in the light of the Grenfell tragedy.

How long is it since you saw the sketch because I think you are misremembering. There's no mention in the sketch at ALL about the status of the residents of the block of flats. No fire flood or crocodiles either. Just 'rotating knives' - the architect (Cleese) usually deigned abattoirs. The joke was his idea that the only reason his application wasn't even considered was because he wasn't a Mason. Nothing to do with class or ridding society of 'undesirables'.

Filming your kids daily lives and putting it on the Internet for everyone and anyone's viewing pleasure .....🤔

The talk of Bill Wyman reminded me of Steven Tyler has anyone mentioned him yet? No idea how it was taken at the time whether there was a scandal.. but when he was 27 he had a 14yo GF who he got the parents to sign over guardianship to him so she could live with him Shock I have to wonder what made the parents sign her over to him like that?

That’s revolting, the poor girl went through so much and was dumped back on her parents a few years later.

After all these backdated cases against these vile predators from the 70s I don’t know how a lot of pop stars from that era, like Tyler and Wyman. I remember reading a few iffy interviews about Bowie too when he died.

Keepyourdistance000 · 03/05/2021 19:23

Terry Wogan...there was something very creepy about him.

Michael Barrymore as per pp.

Angelil · 03/05/2021 19:45

@Lowlight282 YES this. I have never even put a single photograph of my son online (not even an ultrasound) and cannot understand for the life of me why people do. Children are too young to consent to this.

ufucoffee · 03/05/2021 19:48

Watching Fawlty Towers now. Bloody hilarious

That’s actually WORSE than the Paul Hollywood bollocks pic ...I know seems impossible 🤮🤮🤮

iluvnettletea · 03/05/2021 20:19

So many song lyrics from the past are terrible.

Rolling Stones - Some Girls and Brown Sugar

Beatles - Run For Your Life

Needthesunshine · 03/05/2021 20:29

I was 24 and a staff nurse in the RAF in the early 90s. Went to see the GP as I had a chest infection. He told me i should take my top off and run round the block...it wouldn’t help my chest infection but it would cheer the boys up! I’ve no idea why I didn’t make a formal complaint.

SappysCurry · 03/05/2021 20:37

@Honeyroar

Did anyone explain the comments regarding Depeche mode earlier in the thread?
No....as i think it was a mistake/misinformed probably They are without reproach apart from David Gahans drug problems which isn’t the issue here.

Angelil daily family vloggers are absolutely appalling and I dont understand why it's legal. Some of them film really personal stuff- little boys wearing dresses/makeup, girls starting their periods, bra shopping, potty training(I only know this because I follow someone on SM who is campaigning against it). No one seems to care.

MotherOfGodHoulYerWhisht · 03/05/2021 20:58

St Trinians and all the sexy, schoolgirl fancy dress outfits it inspired. Gross.

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 03/05/2021 20:59

@Maggiesfarm yes that Dr Hook, If Not You, song is pretty bad... not in the same league as some of the others mentioned I'm looking at you, Brown Sugar but it weirdly brought back some lovely memories of me and my sisters listening to it on trips and shouting "YOU!!" at the end of every line and falling about laughing. Even at the age of 11 or so, we could see the ridiculousness of the lyrics

MotherOfGodHoulYerWhisht · 03/05/2021 21:07

I was a teen in the early 90’s, and remember Sophie from Home and Away (a schoolgirl), having an affair with a sexy young teacher (Guy Pearce). We all thought it was such a romantic tragedy, she became pregnant and he died before the baby was born (iirc).

Fair enough, then - I was paraphrasing the kind of thing I thought I was remembering, but it seems I wasn't accurate. That said, though, I think there's still a very clear undertone assuming the social level and perceived lack of worth of those generally living in high-rise flats in stark contrast to the members of MP, even without the theme suggesting that Masons looking after their own. Plus, it wasn't really all that funny....!

I also remember the sketch, and have seen it fairly recently. I don't recall the undertone you believe is there. The joke is not about flat tenants being undesirables at all.
BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 03/05/2021 21:27

@ProfessionalWeirdo

I haven't RTFT so apologies if this has already been mentioned.

The song "December '63 (Oh What a Night)" by Franki Valli and The Four Seasons. For decades I thought it was just a very good disco classic. It wasn't until I saw the show "Jersey Boys" that I realised it's actually about loss of virginity.

Similarly (but perhaps less well known) is "Rock Me Gently" by Andy Kim, which was popular in the late 70s when I was a student. At the time I thought it was about dancing, but the lyrics could equally well be about sex.

Pop songs about sex? Shock God help us all! Won't someone think of the children?!

Seriously, sex is a normal and healthy part of life. It should be safe and consensual, and take place between adults, no abuse of power etc... but there's nothing wrong with sex! Child abusers thrive in a culture where sex is seen and secret and sinful.

Fair enough, then - I just re-watched it and that was still my interpretation, but others obviously see it differently. I never said/thought that was what the joke was about - just a subtext I personally believed to be there Smile

WeatherwaxOn · 03/05/2021 21:36

Primary school - fairly innocuous other than booklets with pictures of children with disabilities in that you paid some pennies into a scheme. Lots of talk of the 'ugly' ones.
Secondary school: A 14 year old girl in my class left to have a baby. Her boyfriend was about 18 or 19. She was due to return but became pregnant again.
13/14 year old girls having sex with their boyfriends, of the same sort of age.
Cross country running in aertex shirts and short skirts whilst teacher wore a track suit
We would have to run through the local park and got catcalled. One day there was a flasher, and the teacher just advised, "well, don't look."
15 year old friend but wanting to be a virgin (as she felt 'too old') and asking a friends brother to "do" her. He was about 20 or so.
17 year old girl with a boyfriend of 34. Nobody thought anything of it at the time.
15/16 year old girl having a relationship with one of the lab technicians at school - he was early 20s at the time.

Later; 19 year old friend of mine having an affair with her uni lecturer who was about 40. She wanted me to meet him so he could 'make a woman' of me.

Pretty much all TV of the 70s.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/05/2021 21:38

Fair enough if you're happy for groups with a large fanbase of (sometimes very) youngsters to be singing to them about adults having sex. Not in a sex ed kind of way, but actually often describing being horny and what turns them on. Do you also let your little ones watch Naked Attraction? Take the time to describe to them about what you and their dad did in bed last night and what specific acts really got you both going and 'saw you to a conclusion'?

RoSEbuds6 · 03/05/2021 21:42

Miss World and Page 3 girls. We used to watch Miss World as a family and vote. Seems so demeaning now. Page 3 was just weird, why would a topless woman be even relevant in a newspaper? I never understood it.

ladyinacampervan · 03/05/2021 21:50

The song 'Delilah'... apparently it's okay to stab your woman to death head in if you find her with another man. Confused
