Would you like a disability board?

There are loads of us here with disabilities and quite a lot of threads about disability, but with nowhere obvious to put them quite a lot quickly get buried. That makes it hard to know where to post so that your thread will get seen by people who can help.

I think a new disability board would really help with this. If you agree, head over to this post and leave a comment so Mumsnet can see how much support there is.

There are a few Disability boards

@x2boys

There are a few Disability boards
Which ones? I have never found one which has been relevant to me, but if others have that’s good.

To be fair all the boards fall under the SN titles. I imagine an adult posting with a disability brought on by a condition such as MS for example might not find the support needed on those boards or consider themselves as having special needs.

Hazelnut5 · 01/05/2021 10:37

Yes, that’s exactly the problem.

There is a parents with SN board is it used much ,?

SnarkyBag · 01/05/2021 10:48

Personally I think an Adult Disability topic within the Heath section would work well. I don’t have a disability (but anyone can become disabled) I imagine as an adult I would veer towards looking within a health topic for support and information

I think issue is that people don’t always feel SN and disability are the same thing. My son has ASD so I may consider him to have special needs but I don’t consider him disabled (I know I know not all disability is visible!) So imagine the reverse is also true? I do think it’s up to those seeking the support to be given choices about how and where the topics are placed and labelled. Currently there isn’t any choice you’re either SN or you’re not.

SnarkyBag That’s where I would look too - in Health.

Yes you are right I have a physical disability not an illness my situation isn't the same as a somebody with asn

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 01/05/2021 11:00

Not particularly, no.

I have autism and other associated neurological conditions so a disability board would be useful but it would become another board where parents talk about their children rather than us talking about our issues and solutions.

/being wistful

And before anyone weighs in - yes, I know that this site is called Mumsnet. Yes, I know the original focus of the site was on parenting. Yes, I know that non-parents are welcome to post. Yes, I know that anyone can post in any thread.

I have no issues with any of those points. I am merely saying it would be nice to have a 'first-hand' thread about disability rather than another thread talking about people's experience of other people having disabilities.

Now anticipating the onslaught and possible deletion for violating talk guidelines.

Off to make coffee.

Anyone else want to add anything? The more the merrier.
