Help me!!! school place

We only applied for 1 junior school for our child. The same one their sibling attends. We were offered it. My husband did all the application. He assumed as we only put one choice it would be automatically assumed we’d accepted. This is obviously not the case and he missed an email yesterday saying please remember to accept your school place. Obviously we’ll get in tough choices with them on Tuesday and plead our case- but now I’m terrified my child has lost their place at the school. Has anyone else been in this situation? How quick do they re allocate places?

Yes, I know I should have checked myself....but I thought he had it all under control. Have been busy with newborn.
Am beside myself with worry.
Please, any advice from anyone knowledgable?

I'm not an expert, but I think they need to make clear effort to contact you before withdrawing an offer.

If the prompt only came yesterday I can't see that there will be an issue (or was it an earlier email with a deadline of yesterday?)

Apparently, having made dh search his emails there have been 2 emails, one a week ago and one yesterday.

How does he have to accept the place?
Via an online system, email or paper?

If online or email then just do it now.

(Tempted to suggest that if it is via paper you reply saying oh haven't you had it, we sent it off ages ago, here is a copy.)

I just googled and places needed to be accepted or declined by 30 April. If there is an online process to follow I would see if the link etc still work now. If it’s in person I would be at the school gate at 7am on Tuesday but I would also email the school now as certainly at our local primary emails were still accessed at the weekend.

From memory I think we had to go into the school with paperwork to hand in to accept the places but that was a decade ago so it’s probably all online now.

It’s confusing as some LAs you have to accept and other automatically accept for you.

I would email school and council now and chase it up on Tuesday. Our LA has a worker who’s the key contact for admissions for schools-
Does your LA have someone like that?

It’s all online and the system is not longer functioning now the deadline has passed. Am furious he missed this.

I've just come on to say, it is not your fault.

Your husband wouldn't check your 'work' so why should you check his?

Have emailed the school and council saying it was a dreadful oversight and we still want the place and will be in touch Tuesday.

Oh that's not good, does he have an explanation for why he's ignored the emails?

All you can do is contact them on Tuesday. I'd be beyond furious with your DH, OP. If he's the one who logged on to see what school your dd was allocated, he would also have had the option to accept it there and then.

Yes I’ve just seen this too. It looks like in Hampshire your place is automatically accepted unless you decline but in Surrey you have to accept or decline. Just two examples. Sadly for OP I assume where they live they did need to accept if they received that email.

I can’t imagine they are offering out places now so I think and hope you will be fine OP but I’m sure you’ll spend the weekend worrying. This is something I can completely picture happening in our household except I’d never let my husband even deal with it as this is just the kind of thing he does.

I'd be absolutely furious with him.

This happened to a friend of mine- she forgot to click to confirm the place.

She had to go on the waitlist for the school but as the child had a sibling there, she must have been pretty much top of the waitlist! Got a place in time for September.

But agree with pp that if your DC has to go on a waiting list they will be top of the list (sibling) and almost certain to get a place.

Because it is a pretty important thing to not do!

I am so fed up of the responsibility falling to one parent!

I couldn't leave my partner in charge of that either because I couldn't be sure that it would be done. But why should it be like that?

He just usually so organised. We have a 7 week old and she was in neonatal for a couple weeks and everything’s been crazy busy....I know these are excuses not reasons.....

I would send a letter to your local education authority, and copy it to the school then phone on Tuesday. I’m sure they won’t have reallocated your place only a day after the deadline.

If the deadline was yesterday, they have had no chance to reallocate the place yet. Send an email now and call them on Tuesday morning. I'm sure you will be fine.

They won't be working till Tuesday so they won't be offering spare places till atleast then I'm sure, so I wouldn't worry about, send an email to school and the admissions team and call first thing Tuesday, sure it will be fine, the school must know you want the place because of a sibling, sure it will be fine. And if not, you can appeal for a place I'm sure X

Hopefully they won't have automatically offered it to the top of the list. I'd be at school at 7.30 on Tuesday.

He works in IT. He is on his computer or phone 24/7. He is intelligent and successful and seemingly competent at work. I am baffled.
