Coffee that tastes of pencil sharpenings!

I know, weird. I've been to a local Wetherspoon pub a couple of times for coffee recently and been disappointed both times (I know Wetherspoon isn't that popular on here but please indulge me). The first time, the coffee was stone cold and rather flavourless and the refill was a bit hotter but still bland. The second time, the coffee was reasonably hot but it had a distinct taste and aroma of pencils rather than coffee! As if someone had tipped the contents of a box of HB into the coffee machine rather than coffee beans. To say Wetherspoon sell Lavazza coffee, a supposedly premium brand, it's all rather odd. I've had similarly underwhelming coffees from Coopland and Gregg's recently.

I don't know if I've acquired a preference for my cafetiere coffee which I've been making at home since November (Morrison's Guatemalan or Taylor's Italian) or if shop and pub coffee has hit a new low. Stale coffee beans, dirty and mouldy coffee machines ? Who knows ?

How do you know what pencil sharpenings taste like?

WildRosie · 29/04/2021 21:06

Fair question! My memory as a five year old is of a box of pencils in primary school - strong smell of graphite. I reasonably assume the taste would more or less match the smell. Anyways, the real point is that the coffee tasted of something other than coffee and it wasn't pleasant. I can't wait to see what Costa tastes like now.

Are you sure this isn't a Covid after effect?

I am in NZ and they are huge coffee drinkers over here. We were in lockdown for 6 weeks and as soon as we came out everyone rushed out desperate for a barista coffee. A lot of people were disappointed! It was even on the news 😂 I think your taste buds can change pretty quickly when you get used to coffee at home.

WildRosie · 29/04/2021 21:30

AFAIK, I haven't had Covid (one vaccination jab so far) so it's not likely to be that. I hope it's just a temporary blip caused by my own barista-like prowess! I am still looking forward to nice coffee away from home, even though I've saved a ton of money recently.

I know exactly what you mean about it tasting like pencil sharpenings smell! I had one today that was like this, I much prefer coffee at home now.

Lelophants · 29/04/2021 21:50

I definitely get this!! I find when it goes cold it tastes that way. So gross.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 29/04/2021 21:55

Probably old coffee if they use ready ground.

Thankyou all. Now I know I'm not alone.
