What to do with postcard collection?

My mum has collected thousands of postcards - mostly
in the eighties but has cards going back to 19th c and up to about 2012ish - people seemed to stop sending them around then, suppose with increasing access to internet it’s less of a thing .

They’re just stuffed in a trunk and not on display or anything . They’re great for eg social history (a lot have eg alcohol prices on the back!) and the letters are brilliant . Even have a handful that were written on top of the twin towers in the 80s by my great gran .

It’s a window into the past - as so, so many of the senders are sadly deceased now - it’s a glimpse into their lives even if most are pretty mundane !

Just wondering if others collect them and if so what do they do with them? Mum has significant mental health issues and this has brightened her up looking at them - it’s the most animated I’ve seen her in weeks, so I’d love to help her display them somehow or figure out how to share them with people ? Facebook seems the most obvious?

I'd pick out some of the best ones and add them to local Facebook pages.

Do you have any of Morecambe?

sunsetsand · 29/04/2021 19:41

Or you could create your own Instagram/Facebook page uploading them all!

hesterstanhope · 29/04/2021 19:45

Collecting postcards (ephemera) is a popular hobby.
Have a look on Instagram under #foundpostcard #vintagepostcards etc.
Could be a fun project to post them on there.

You could put them into (acid free) photo albums.

A Facebook page is also a great idea. Or instagram - one postcard per day!

GameofPhones · 29/04/2021 19:51

You could photo them and put in a digital photo frame. Then you have a constant slide show while it is switched on, or used as a computer screen saver. I find it's a good way to keep photos alive.

I’m in a local nostalgia Facebook group and they love any old pictures and postcards.

Leeds2 · 29/04/2021 19:55

A local museum might be interested in the ones that are very old.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/04/2021 19:56

Old ones are worth money. It’s a great bit of social history. I have a few and took a photo of one a day for my friend in lockdown. The messages were so interesting. We took all day inventing a life for these people. Really helped lockdown as some were hilarious (unintentionally). Led us to research the addresses and all sorts of historical facts.

Will have a hunt for Morecambe - she must have at least one somewhere, seem to have for every other holiday destination in the U.K....

Will upload a handful on here too ... quite like the idea of instagram or Facebook for showing some of them . She’s got albums but they’re pretty battered now so probably needs new ones, will see what I can come up with online .

I collect some old postcards too - those from ww1 especially the French & German ones.
The ones with British soldiers on are highly in demand so I find them generally too expensive! From ebay.

I also have some old 1900s postcards of my local area that I've posted photos of in my 'Memories of X area' Facebook group.

I have collected 100s of old photos, cdv & cabinet cards from Victorian & Edwardian times, ww1 & ww2... They are in boxes but I'd like to find a way of sorting them out & displaying some of them too.

Mercedes519 · 29/04/2021 20:19

Are you on Pinterest? You can add your own pins, sort them into boards and add loads of notes as to where they are etc.

Kind of like an online album really.

Why Morecambe? Grin So random @sunsetsand

TheRavenNevermore · 29/04/2021 21:15

Just out curiosity I had a look at completed sales on eBay of UK Topographical postcards. I am stunned at the money some of them make!

The Perth one is great. Real blast from the past, before they built the shopping centre (grew up there).

sunsetsand · 29/04/2021 21:57

@LostInTime it's home Grin

Thanks for the pics. Keep them coming!

I have a collection of postcards which hasn't been added to for quite some time. They are not that old mainly starting from the 1970s. Over the years I've asked my niece who is nearly 11 if she would like to see my collection but she's politely declined. Little does she know that when Auntie, who has no children and she is my only niece, dies she will inherit my postcards Grin
