Tell me about your rubbish birthdays

It’s my birthday today and it’s already off to a splendid start! My body decided to give me my period a few days early (they’ve been awful since DD2 was born in September), there was no hot water whilst I had a shower and I won’t get any presents today. DH was given strict instructions NOT to buy me presents because 1) we have no more room for any more stuff

My 50th birthday present from my daughter was a d & v bug she'd had a few days earlier. Grin On the day I'd treated myself to a indulgent solo shopping trip to York. Had been there half an hour and started to feel sick, realised I needed to get home asap. Slightly panicky 40 min drive home in time for everything to kick off. Cancelled 'special' dinner out with family and took up residence in the loo!

@Bells3032

Two years ago i ended up having surgery on my birthday. I tore a hole in my ear canal and needed to be repaired. the only date the doctor could do for over a month was my birthday. then had a reaction to the sedation and was sick. so fun birthday
That sounds super fun! Hope it’s all ok now.

Happy birthday OP💐

A few years ago, nobody except me remembered my birthday. Not my husband, nor my mum, nor my friends. Nobody. I spent the whole day expecting some great surprise... but nothing happened. It was very odd!

I can’t imagine no one at all remembering my birthday. That must have been awful for you. Very belated Happy Birthday to you! Cake

My 18th and 21st were both shit. I did nothing for my 18th and then my mum insisted on organising a party for my 21st, but it was basically just for her and mostly her friends. She got hammered and humiliated me, so I left and went to bed.

Last year was supposed to be amazing - we were due to fly out on holiday on my 30th birthday, followed a few weeks later by my Masters graduation. Lockdown 1.0 put paid to that and I spent my 30th working from home with a mail order cake, then my graduation took the form of an email from the university.

I’m sorry covid buggered your plans. It has a lot to answer for. It was my sister’s 30th this year and plans had to be drastically reduced. DH’s 30th is this December. Hopefully we can celebrate properly.

I've had 2 lockdown birthdays now. Not the worst ever but not exactly fun filled. I also got the mother of all migraines on my birthday this year (end of March) and spent the entire day thinking I might die. My 21st was awful. I walked my dog in the afternoon and broken my foot so spent the rest of the day in A&E and missed my night out. Everyone that was invited still went out together though and had a blast. Bastards.

Possibly my 25th where I was dumped by the love of my life. I drove to his on the sunshine singing along to the radio the day before, drive back two days later crying.

FizzyPink · 29/04/2021 14:01

While I was at university I lived with a complete waste of space boyfriend. For his 21st a few months before I had taken him for dinner and then thrown a huge surprise party with all his friends and family there. He absolutely loved it.

Then when it came to my 21st, I was away the whole weekend at a sports competition. I got back late at night on my birthday and was thinking he might have decorated the flat with his free weekend. Nope, there was absolutely nothing except a rubber duck he had bought me Confused Apparently he couldn’t find me a present so he thought the rubber duck would be funny.

The following weekend, we stayed in a lovely hotel, had a Michelin star dinner, all paid for by me!

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 29/04/2021 14:11

Not nearly as bad as some of these, but my 70th birthday in January - we had planned to go on a trip of a lifetime to Canada! Nope! We faced timed DS and DIL rather than seeing them in person! Still, I had DH. “Mustn’t grumble” as my Dad’s generation said!

The duck alone would be enough reason to dump him.

Happy 70th!!! Make sure you still do your trip of a lifetime even if it’s not when you planned.

Happy birthday, OP Gin Flowers

I'm originally from Northern Ireland so you can guess. 18th birthday - evacuated. Bomb scare. Thankfully just a scare, though.

Further back - 5th birthday. I was a quiet child with no friends. Mum was a popular woman with lots of friends. So their children were invited to my party. They took it over, ate my cake, pushed me out of the way. There are photos of me crying.

30th birthday - there was someone in work whose non-milestone birthday was the day before mine. A fuss was made of her (and she wasn't even one of the super popular people). Nothing for me until the caretaker realised and he went out and bought some doughnuts and a card at around 3pm. I'll never forget his kindness the way I'll never forget how ostracised that workplace made me feel.

45th birthday coming up soon. Will be more than happy to spend it low key at home with my OH and cat, thanks! Smile

Happy birthday OP and @goldierocks

My birthday is in that window in the last week of March where we were in lockdown both this year and last. Not fun but DH made a real effort both times with a really posh meal and he and DCs made me feel special.

My worst was my seventh (I’m 54 now). My brothers and I were all sick at home (so no cupcakes at school and being sung to by our classmates) but my twin brother, whose birthday it also was, went into febrile convulsions and collapsed to the floor. My 6 month pregnant mom had to drag him out of the bathroom where he’d fallen and I had to phone a friend of my mom’s to get an ambulance. From what my mom told me he almost died that day. He recovered fine but it was really scary. I did still get a present though that evening when my mom and dad got home from the hospital - a Mary Poppins doll (I was obsessed with Mary Poppins in 1974 Grin).

Hope the birthdays get better...

KurtWilde · 29/04/2021 14:16

Happy Birthday!

My crappiest birthday (and one of my worst days) was when my day old baby had to have an emergency life saving op for a condition we didn't know they had before birth! It was rubbish, but they came out of surgery late in the evening after it was a success, so try to focus on that bit of the day!

Your poor brother! I’m glad he was ok and you got your Mary Poppins doll. My DD1 is 7 and loves Mary Poppins too.
