Tell me about your rubbish birthdays

It’s my birthday today and it’s already off to a splendid start! My body decided to give me my period a few days early (they’ve been awful since DD2 was born in September), there was no hot water whilst I had a shower and I won’t get any presents today. DH was given strict instructions NOT to buy me presents because 1) we have no more room for any more stuff

@MajorMujer

Then partner, skint as usual borrowed £5 off his best friend for a card and a present. Spent exactly £1.50 on a shitty card and a bar of Galaxy chocolate & took himself off alone for a pint ( because he deserved a treat apparently Hmm). I found out because his friend wasn't impressed & they argued under the bedroom window.
Good on his friend for calling him out on that!

I had my tonsils out on my sixth birthday, so only got to see my family at visiting time. Mum and Dad bought me a special present to make up for it. When I got home my brother's had broken it.

Ariannah · 29/04/2021 08:29

My 30th was the absolute worst. I was at a very lonely time in my life and I had nobody. No partner, no friends. Only my mum cared but she was poorly so my birthday wasn’t top of her list. Nobody bought me a present. Nobody called me. I didn’t see anyone. I drank a full bottle of wine and cried all day. A few days later when my mum felt better she brought me a present.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 29/04/2021 08:29

Happy birthday!

My family forgets mine every year and has to ask me when it is.

@MarisPiper92

Happy birthday OP! Hope it gets better! Here are my slightly underwhelming birthdays:

16: abroad meeting DSF's family for the first time. No friends, no presents. They did make me a cake, but it was full of marshmallows and I couldn't eat it because I'm vegetarian.

18: went to a bar with bf and a friend. Was fine, friend and I were just warming up when at about 9pm bf said "Right, shall we head home then?". We were all staying at his so didn't feel we could say no. Was probably in bed by 10pm

21: internship in London, living in a hostel dorm. Had world's worst period, visibly bled through my jeans in the office and also realised I was overdrawn. Spent the evening lying on a towel in the dorm listening to radio 4.

Fortunately they've all been better since!

Vegetarian solidarity!! So many lovely gestures from people that I can’t eat.

This period was also a bleed through everything one. Luckily, I’m at home.

@ChiefBabySniffer

My 40th birthday my mum and dad decided to tell me that their friend, a convicted goon and rapist, was out of prison and has been around that day to see them. While my nieces and nephews where there. It was the final nail in the coffin. We cut contact totally there and then. Caused massive splits amongst the family. This man has since fully groomed them, bled them dry, left them with debts at their property etc. Then two days later I went on holiday for three nights with my best friend to lie on a beach and got a call at 7 in the morning to say my house has been raided by the police and my teenage kids arrested. And I was stuck in Europe.

My 40th was totally horrific to be fair. I'm never going to be dissuaded in another birthday providing it doesn't involve rapists or police man taking me kids away.

Yeah, that’s a terrible birthday! I’ll stick with my cold shower.

@BiddyPop

The day I drove back home with DD, leaving DH behind in hospice with DFIL, knowing that I wouldn't see DFIL again (he was awake and lucid, but that was the last afternoon he was). Dd needed to get back to school, I needed to get back to work. It was 2.5 hours drive and I cried most of the way (and it took more like 5 hours with stops to mop up and keep in control). Not one person wished me happy birthday that year (and that is absolutely no issue for me, it was absolutely not a priority at the time).

I collected DD straight from school, having abandoned work, and drove back down 2 days later, with DFIL passing away early in the morning on our 3rd day back down. Which was less than 6 weeks after he had been mowing the lawn 1 evening and went to GP following day as something wasn't quite right.

I've also had a birthday (and a Christmas) in the past year where teen DDs attitude has been so bad and ruined the day for everyone, and particularly for me. Rude, obnoxious, sneering, totally disrespectful and not just didn't bother buying a token present but bought quite nice presents for DH (it's a pandemic, a bar of chocolate from supermarket would have been perfect).

Flowers I’m really sorry to hear that.

Happy birthday!

You could use this to your advantage. Remind them several times a year. Wink

I’m so sorry to hear about these birthdays. What a shitty way to spend a day for some of you.

My STBEX rang me up to say he HAD to go to a white tie dinner on my birthday. It was ‘business’ and all that. Summer time.

So I spent the night on my own. The next morning he rang to tell me what a ‘terrible’ evening he’d had... he’d been so hot in his white tie... the hall wasn’t air conditioned blah blah blah... Can’t say I responded with much.

Few months later, he was recounting this story to someone in front of me. After he’d told his sob story, I just piped up ‘Yes, and it happened to be my birthday that day too’.

The bloke who was being addressed didn’t know where to look!

I was married to a man who always had a couple of hundred spent on him for his birthday, cake, special meal made. We would have known about it if we hadn’t.
I’ve lost count of the birthdays of mine he didn’t bother about, no card, no present.
Then there was the birthday the kids organised, they were about ten. He sulked and didn’t attend.
I think though, the (small, think two quid size) box of quality street for my fortieth stands out the most. It just said to me, oh do shut up! I stayed another 18 years!

theotherfossilsister · 29/04/2021 09:42

I broke a rib on the night before my birthday once.

Wineat5isfine · 29/04/2021 09:51

2 lockdown birthdays running! This year was especially shit as my poor husband and children came down with a sick bug the evening before, so I spent 2 days nursing them, running around with dettol...and missed out on a lovely lunch out.

I was a teacher and like many teachers you sort of 'put off' being ill but the moment you stop you get ill.

My birthday is in the half term holidays

I had 5 consecutive birthdays in bed with chest infections.

goldierocks · 29/04/2021 10:28

Happy birthday OP! It's my birthday today as well.

Ex-DH always used to be 'ill' on my birthday every year. Took himself to bed for two days & used it as an excuse not to get me a card (never mind a present). He did it for 18 years in a row, except on my 30th when my family arranged a day out (for all of us).

My DDad was terminally ill with cancer; I think he held out an extra couple of days so as not to pass on my birthday. He died just after midnight on 2nd May (over a decade ago now).

I hope you have a lovely day Flowers

Teacher here too so I know what you mean. It’s why I never book holidays for the first week of the summer.

It’s my birthday next week. Just had a text saying my 2nd COVID Jab has been brought forward - hurray! To my birthday - so that’s a great present.

We won’t be able to go out to where we’re wanted as my appt is in the afternoon. Oh well.

Shame you can’t go out but I’d happily go for my covid jab today. I’ve got ages to wait.

Two years ago i ended up having surgery on my birthday. I tore a hole in my ear canal and needed to be repaired. the only date the doctor could do for over a month was my birthday. then had a reaction to the sedation and was sick. so fun birthday
