Actors not watching stuff they're in

I've recently been listening to a podcast about popular TV series. In the podcast various actors who were in the show have been interviewed and quite a lot of them have said that they don't watch things that they are in. Or if they do it's through their fingers and they don't enjoy it.

I'm wondering why that is. If you're involved in making a peice of art, which a TV show might be considered to be, would you not like to see the finished product..Would it not be a bit disatisfying not to.

I'm just curious. It doesn't seem to be the same for writers and directors.

Probably perfectionists and very critical of themselves. Actors do most scenes over and over again and don't get to choose which are used.

I'm not an actor but I hate seeing myself on video and hearing my voice. Yuck!

I’ve done quite a bit of public speaking through work and feel really awkward watching it back. I always think of something else I could have said and am surprised at how much voice sounds like a quite-posh-teenage-girl

I imagine it’s the same for actors

I’ve been in this situation.

It’s really hard to be objective about yourself and not to get so self conscious that it affects you in future projects.

Whilst in training we HAD to watch ourselves and be critical, post training personally a lot of us found/find it better to do the work, trust it and the editing process is good enough and leave it be.

The ego gets involved and that kills decent acting. Often it’s never as good as you hoped. Or it gets butchered in editing. Watching sex/kissing scenes is uncomfortable.

It just makes you very neurotic. A lot of actors can’t handle that. It gets in the way of your job which is to tell the story. Not worry about your assymetric face or having enormous pores.

I’m sure the narcissists and the ones who are only in it because they like attention LOVE watching themselves though.

We’d always say they’d be better off doing reality TV.
