Clutter!

janlevinson · 28/04/2021 11:43

Absolutely fed up of the clutter in my house. Think the main issue is there isn't a place for some things.
Mainly-
Bags that are in daily use
Blankets for sofa
School books
Letters that need actioned but don't have time to do it immediately
Sunglasses
Vitamins/medication that needs to be used on a daily basis
Handheld hoover
Kids pencils/art/toys that have migrated downstairs
Picnic blankets
Outdoor toys like giant jenga and rounders set
Stuff that needs selling on eBay

These are just the things I can see around me right now. I need to get it all sorted but it's so time consuming and I don't know where to start. I dream of an organised and tidy house so any ideas welcome! Thanks 👍🏼

Get rid of stuff you don't use first.

Do you have room for a small kallax unit for the snall stuff like school books, letters/admin, art stuff, sunglasses

Medicines in a kitchen cupboard.

Hooks hooks and more hooks for bags etc

Blanket box for blankets. Doubles up as extra seating.

Outdoor toys outdoors if you have room. Can you fit in a small plastic shed?

Picnic blankets in car boot.

Thanks! Some good ideas there.

I really need to work on getting rid of a lot of stuff but struggling to find the time to do it.

At first try and just get rid of 1 or 2 things a day. It will make it seem like a less mammoth task that way!

You'll probably find that
A. It adds up quicker than you think
B. You find once you get started you start clearing more

I love having a good declutter but I think you do need to buy stuff to help (boxes etc).

Do you have a downstairs cupboard/closet? I would get one of those hanging storage things that fit over the (inside) of the door and put things like sunglasses/bags etc in there. Our shoe cupboard has one of these along with coats, golf clubs, Hoover, ironing board etc.

I keep all my vitamins and stuff in a clear plastic box in the bathroom so I know what I need to take.

For kids stuff downstairs, a toy box that everything can be shoved in and moved to the side.

Can the sofa blankets be put under a side table?

I’d also invest in a nice bookshelf and have sections so normal books, school stuff and the bottom shelf for admin (letters and folders of bank statements etc).

Ask look up decluttering ideas on Pinterest and sites like good housekeeping online, then often have tips for different areas.

Do you have a garage you can keep your outdoor stuff in a big box?

Stuff to sell on eBay is the worst! Mine is currently all over the place waiting to be photographed... when I can be bothered once all that is done it gets folded up and put in a suitcase or bag till it sells.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the ideas. Yes 1 or 2 items a day sounds doable.

Yes I've got a cupboard downstairs and a garage but the garage is full of loads of my husbands clutter - so much do that you can barely get in it. I keep nagging him to clear it out, but again he never has time!
I think little and often is going to be the way forward.
