Canterbury to Dover

Visiting family In June who live in Canterbury. I'd like to visit Dover too and while I'll have my car and can drive, I'm wondering if there's an alternative option? Train? Bus? Family have just moved there so they're not sure either.

Thank you

There's two stations in Canterbury - East and West. It takes about 30 minutes from Canterbury East to Dover and about an hour from Canterbury West.
I'd recommend you driving though if you want to visit the castle etc.

Thanks! Do you know what parking in Dover is like?

Depends where you want to go in Dover but there are several car parks in the town and and castle has its own large car park as does the white cliffs centre

Dover is a standard run-down UK town, it's the castle and the cliffs you'll want to visit really (both of which are stunning). The walk from station to cliffs is a bit of an unattractive schlepp, so I'd second driving. Factor in time for a long stroll along the cliff tops, it's so beautiful, especially on a sunny day. Don't miss out the wartime tunnels at the castle.

If you do end up in the town, the Roman Painted House is pretty incredible, definitely worth a visit. De Bradleigh Wharf has some decent outlet shops if that's your thing. Cullins Yard near De Bradleigh, and Dover Patrol right on the beach are probably the best place to eat (limited choice) - a picnic on the cliffs would be nice too.

Parking in Dover is normally fine. There's a big one at St James retail park. If you want to visit the castle and the cliffs I would definitely drive. Second the lunch recommendations above. Also the White Horse pub.

Thank you! Yes, it's the castle and cliffs I really want to visit.

Agree with both posts above I would drive if you want castle and cliffs as they are not an easy walk from the station. Cullins Yard or the allotment in town for lunch.

Thank you! 😁
