The woman is here to fit the sign

Is what I said when the contractor (who was a woman) arrived to fit our for sale sign. DH says I was rude to say woman but it's better than 'laaaadeeeyyy' and I wouldn't be so patronising as to say girl. If it was a man he'd have thought nothing of it.

Perhaps I should have said the 'vagina haver' is here Grin

He's being ridiculous. Perhaps ask him what it is inside him that makes him squirm when he hears the word "woman"? Nothing good.

Oh, it's a terrible dilemma. How to describe random people. Easy enough to say that woman is equivalent to man and only use lady if you'd also use gentleman, but you try actually telling your toddler to "move over for the nice woman" on the path and you get glared at...

I was in Tesco once and had a problem with the self scan. The young man couldn't help me and called his female supervisor. He said 'this woman is having a problem here' and I thought it sounded awful. I think 'lady' would have been better.
