Career decisions- how did you decide?

If you are happy with your chosen career/s or job how did you know that was what you wanted to do? Was it always something you were interested in or maybe an opportunity came your way and you tried it and found you enjoyed it etc?

Or maybe you researched roles through books, websites, talked to people in those roles etc and discovered what interested you - any recommendations please?

I think what I struggle with is the difference between what I’m really interested in for a job vs. not actually capable of doing because I’m not academically qualified or intelligent enough I.e always been interested in nursing/health careers but I know I don’t have the brains for it. The second career I have been interested in is a Buyer/Buyer’s Assistant as I worked with people in these roles for years and found them interesting but I know I don’t have the financial acumen (maths is absolutely not my strong point) or marketing know-how etc. I have a BA degree from 25 years ago but have never used it, and have to admit I’ve forgotten most of it.

I’ve been a SAHM for 5 years and want to return to work and do something totally different but the trouble is I have no idea what that looks like! I’ve never been one of these people who’ve had a burning passion for any particular career, and just coasted along in long-term positions, never progressing and always sideways moves (sales & logistics roles).

I just wondered if anyone has read a really good book or found a website which helps with skills and experience vs interests that is exceptionally good - there are so many that do this but nothing has really been that good so far.
