Keep getting missed calls from similar numbers to my own...

...is this happening to anyone else?

I think I remember hearing somewhere that it’s a scam.

I’m now getting 4 or 5 a day and every time I block a number another one pops up! Every time it’s a similar mobile number to my own.

How can I stop this 🤯

Yes same here! I thought it was strange how similar they were to my number. Must be some sort of scam. I don’t answer and then block!

TakeYourFinalPosition · 26/04/2021 12:32

Yep, me and DH have been getting this for a week or so, too.

peanutbutterjimjams · 26/04/2021 12:33

Me too! Idiot scammers.

PlatinumBrunette · 26/04/2021 12:34

Me too. I'm ignoring now. It's some sort of computer program running through phone numbers to see which are active. (I'm totally guessing here! But that's what it seems like.) I figure if I ignore, then it will be marked as 'inactive' 🤷‍♀️

It’s so annoying as we are in the process of moving home so getting a lot of phone calls anyway...trying to filter between the spam and legit calls. Very frustrating.

I did. Really unfortunately I was expecting a call from friend with new number so actually picked up (sorry to shock everyone - i
Answered a call). Was a scam telling
Me my ni number had been ‘compromised’.
When went to block I noticed the number was one different to my own !

LilacGlasses · 08/06/2021 15:32

This has started happening to me. Yesterday I had 5 calls from mobile numbers which are the same as mine but the last 3 digits different. And different numbers each time. I missed the first two calls luckily then thought it was a coincidence that the numbers are so similar so was on alert.
Today I’ve had 9 calls so far from different numbers but now I’ve got my phone set to silence unknown numbers but it’s still really annoying. I nearly rang one of them back by mistake when I was blocking the number but managed to stop the call before it connected. Who knows where I would be ringing- probably some poor innocent sod whose number they are using!
Utter bastards. What will these scum bags come up with next?

MrsLCSofLichfield · 08/06/2021 15:35

Yes, I've been getting the odd one of these for the last couple of months. I just keep blocking them.

Nightmanagerfan · 08/06/2021 15:39

I’ve had a few of these lately with a recorded message saying there’s fraud on my national insurance number. It’s clearly a Scam and the tone is threatening. I worry about vulnerable people falling for these kinds of scams.

Greybeardy · 08/06/2021 16:30

Me too - actually had a missed call from my own number which is bizarre - not sure how they manage that!

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/06/2021 16:34

I called myself a few weeks ago Confused

And after that I also had a few calls from similar numbers.

I recently had another spam call too which was automated to tell me my NI number had been linked to some fraudulent activity or crimes if some sort.

PilatesPeach · 08/06/2021 16:46

yes lots over the last week or so and 3 yesterday and 2 today as well as a few texts

LilacGlasses · 08/06/2021 19:07

I don’t have voicemail set up on my phone so mine will just ring for so long and they can’t leave a message then I suppose they will hang up. Wonder if that’s why I’m getting bombarded with calls. Bloody annoying if it’s a genuine call though and they will not get through to me.

thefirstmrsrochester · 08/06/2021 19:15

Me too, the incoming call is a digit or two at most off my own number. I block them.

User27aw · 08/06/2021 19:17

I've had this too! I just block them, but then another similar one calls a few days later.

alycatnorton · 08/07/2021 10:18

These calls are 99.99% scammers (I work for a telecomms startup). Using Internet telephony (it's called Voice over IP or VOIP) the scammers can fake the caller ID (the number you see calling you). A piece of software called a robocaller is munching through a range of phone numbers, calling each one and setting the caller ID to look very similar to your number. The idea is that the number looks vaguely recognisable to you so you're more likely to pick up. If you do pick up the robocaller software connects you to one of their tedious 'Hi, I',m calling from Windows technical support...' and (unfortunately) adds you to its list of people who answer (so you get called more often). So definitely beware of calls from numbers just a couple of digits different from your own!

Arsebucket · 08/07/2021 10:21

Yep. I get them. I picked up because I’m waiting on some job applications and they usually call on mobiles, so I can’t ignore random numbers.

They are always automated from “Dan” at Amazon - I don’t know what computer dan wants because I hang up.

Oh, and one where there is a warrant out for my arrest for something or other.

Teaandbicciesplease · 08/07/2021 10:22

@alycatnorton Shock Clever bastards!
