My partner insults and mocks the prime ministers name

Iwant2D · 25/04/2021 12:53

I'm in Ireland and the prime ministers name is - Michael - in Irish its pronounced as - Mehaul - that is the pronunciation of his name.

Nearly every day when my partner has an issue with politics or there's something in the news or there is a new announcement from the government, my partner insults and mocks his name.

My partner calls him - Mehole.

I know what hole means - it's a hole for example - to dig a hole. It means a hollow deepness.

There is another poor association with hole and in Ireland sometimes it can mean - anus.

I hate it when my partner mocks and insults the prime ministers name and calls him - Mehole. The way he does it is long and drawn out too so its like - Mehooooole.

It's drives me nuts and I really hate it. I haven't told him yet and to be honest I'm not too sure if I will be telling him. I think it's shows much deeper that goes beyond what it is. I think it shows something like a fundamental difference.

I think mocking and insulting the man's name shows an ignorance and small mindedness towards politics. What is mocking his name going to achieve? Does it make him feel better mocking and insulting his name? Is mocking his name going to make covid go away?

I think my partner should be going into politics and government to see if he can do better.
I'm beginning to really dislike spending time with him now because I know there will be a mention of - Mehooooole and I would rather spend my free time off reading a book or enjoying myself. Not listening to my partner mock and insult another man's name.

As much as it would piss me me off.
I think you are massively over reacting to be so offended at it all

minou123 · 25/04/2021 12:57

Christ
You would have a fit if you heard what I call Boris Johnson.

DoingItMyself · 25/04/2021 12:58

Looking at it from the outside, Miggledy is adorable and everyone should be respectful. But I haven't considered any politics, maybe it's not so good from the point of view of an Irish person. Or maybe your man wants to show he's just a bit of a rebel. If this is indicative of his attitude to life in general, think about whether you want to stick with him.

MysweetAudrina · 25/04/2021 13:01

In fairness a lot of people in Ireland refer to him as that. Personally I don't but it Leo the Leak and Sleepy Eamonn are often used too. I mostly see it on FB. Personally I think it is a bit puerile and I don't think it really adds much to the conversation and is mostly used by those who don't really understand the role of government.

UCOinanOCG · 25/04/2021 13:03

I would have no issue with that. You would really hate to hear what I call Nicola Sturgeon!

My kids used to find it hilarious that the American president had a name meaning fart. I decided they were to young to learn that the British PM had a name that meant penis. Is it a political issue between you and your boyfriend or is is just that he's essentially being rude about someone's name and you don't think is fair?

You are talking about a different person than the OP.

It irritates me when I hear people say it. It isn't funny and it isn't original. I 'd probably just make some kind of sarcastic comment like 'how original' and roll my eyes or something.

Chatanooga1 · 25/04/2021 13:06

Does he change the name of any other famous people’s names?

I always see on Facebook, Meghan Markle referred to as anything but Meghan. (MeGain for example)

It just seems to be a trend to change the names of people in the public eye.

Cheekyweegobshite · 25/04/2021 13:12

YANBU. I really dislike people changing names in a mocking way like this, it makes them sound childish and pathetic. Argue with their policies if you disagree with them but making up stupid nicknames makes people like your DH sound like they're trying to sound like a crappy tabloid writer. I'd be really embarrassed by them.

whenthebellsring · 25/04/2021 13:15

I was thinking of what some people call Meghan Markle while reading the OP!

I don't think it's on to make fun of someone by switching their name to mean something else. But I'm sure it's a losing battle to fight.

Roszie · 25/04/2021 13:15

My grandad is Irish and called Michael. Pronounced Michael. I'm never heard any of his Irish relatives saying it how you're saying.

Mydarlingmyhamburger · 25/04/2021 13:16

I really couldn’t get worked up about this

Op is referring to Micheál Martin, not Michael D. Higgins Smile

My apologies to them both! And to Irish people in general.
I'd like to say I'll stop commenting on things I know nothing about but sadly, it's been my lifetime's work.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 25/04/2021 13:21

Ah you're grand, @DoingItMyself

The Taoiseach is called Micheál, different name, different pronunciation Smile
ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 25/04/2021 13:23

A lot of people do this - celebrity/politician names are altered all the time. I personally absolutely hate it because my uncle used to do this with my name when I was little - he made it into an insult and I felt so belittled. However, it’s my issue -people always have and always will do this so there’s no point taking it seriously I guess.

TheUndoingProject · 25/04/2021 13:32

How is your relationship generally? Because I think finding minor irritations like this so significant, indicates a degree of contempt that is hard to come back from in a relationship.

I’d recommend reading Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by J Gottman and Nan Silver.

Bordois · 25/04/2021 13:40

The Taoiseach is called Micheál, different name, different pronunciation

So the OP didn't get his name correct either...

Howshouldibehave · 25/04/2021 13:45

Why would you think this is just an Irish thing?!

WallaceinAnderland · 25/04/2021 13:45

Boris Johnson is often referred to as BJ

Mehole is funny in a childish way though. It's like Uranus

Heysiriyouknob · 25/04/2021 13:51

Honesty, you need to chill out about this.

I lock a lot of people names, ones in the media that I can't stand and even people in real like I don't like (in my own head).

It's just a way of venting frustration or being daft.

Oh God, you would hate our house when BJ is on the telly. I would tell him but I think you're being a bit precious, I don't think it's indicative of small-mindedness, merely pissing about.
