My partner insults and mocks the prime ministers name

Iwant2D · 25/04/2021 12:53

I'm in Ireland and the prime ministers name is - Michael - in Irish its pronounced as - Mehaul - that is the pronunciation of his name.

Nearly every day when my partner has an issue with politics or there's something in the news or there is a new announcement from the government, my partner insults and mocks his name.

My partner calls him - Mehole.

I know what hole means - it's a hole for example - to dig a hole. It means a hollow deepness.

There is another poor association with hole and in Ireland sometimes it can mean - anus.

I hate it when my partner mocks and insults the prime ministers name and calls him - Mehole. The way he does it is long and drawn out too so its like - Mehooooole.

It's drives me nuts and I really hate it. I haven't told him yet and to be honest I'm not too sure if I will be telling him. I think it's shows much deeper that goes beyond what it is. I think it shows something like a fundamental difference.

I think mocking and insulting the man's name shows an ignorance and small mindedness towards politics. What is mocking his name going to achieve? Does it make him feel better mocking and insulting his name? Is mocking his name going to make covid go away?

I think my partner should be going into politics and government to see if he can do better.
I'm beginning to really dislike spending time with him now because I know there will be a mention of - Mehooooole and I would rather spend my free time off reading a book or enjoying myself. Not listening to my partner mock and insult another man's name.

It depends on what he is doing. Is he taking the piss just to take the piss out of someone anyone, like a bully at school?

Or does he have some major issue with the guy as a political person?

The first one, I'd hate and would have a word. It sounds, from theact you think its the sign of deeper mismatch on your values, that this is what is happening.

The second I could understand better.

TheCrowening · 25/04/2021 14:04

I’m sorry but I did smile at OP giving us background information about what a hole is.

I suspect something like this, being repeated, would irritate me too. I might think it’s the onset of the Ick, to be honest.

CovidSmart · 25/04/2021 14:04

@ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing

A lot of people do this - celebrity/politician names are altered all the time. I personally absolutely hate it because my uncle used to do this with my name when I was little - he made it into an insult and I felt so belittled. However, it’s my issue -people always have and always will do this so there’s no point taking it seriously I guess.
I'm not surpised you hated it. Because that was the actions of a bully, esp as I am sure he KNEW you hated it.
Northernsoullover · 25/04/2021 14:06

Its just irritating. Like people calling Boris 'Doris' and Mark Drakeford 'Dripford' its playground stuff and I do think less of people for being so immature.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/04/2021 14:07

@Iwant2D if he annoys you he annoys you. Why you don't think you'll tell him is a bit of a worry though! Unless you think it might be the last straw!

You certainly don't make it sound like a particularly happy relationship - in just those few words Smile

purplecorkheart · 25/04/2021 14:07

I probably would just internally roll my eyes but probably wouldn't bother me enough to do anything more. How is the rest of your relationship?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 25/04/2021 14:10

@Howshouldibehave

There is another poor association with hole and in Ireland sometimes it can mean - anus.

Why would you think this is just an Irish thing?!

I think the phrase, for example “I will in me hole” is particular to Ireland. Whereas here people would say “my arse”.

Oh so what? In our house Matt Hancock is Matt Handjob or Matt Wanksock. And don’t get us started on BJ!

Snowrabbit · 25/04/2021 14:17

I think you have a charmed life if this is what gets your back up. Do you have any experience of real world issues?

Magnificentmug12 · 25/04/2021 14:18

Well our president is BJ, so it could be worse for you 😂

When I read the way you say Michael I automatically heard me hole too! 😂

indiakulfi · 25/04/2021 14:20

@minou123

Christ You would have a fit if you heard what I call Boris Johnson.
^ This.

I your partner was insulting Johnson I'd come on the thread to applaud him.

CharlotteRose90 · 25/04/2021 14:21

This has given me such a laugh . I mean who gets sensitive over someone’s name. Unless you’re planning using that name for your child your being precious. There’s bigger issues in the world.

tara66 · 25/04/2021 14:22

It's just a healthy disrespect for politicians and free speech.

SummersMumma · 25/04/2021 14:23

I think you both need to get out more x

KurtWilde · 25/04/2021 14:27

I call Boris all sorts. And Matt Hancock. But then I can't stand politicians or their advisors so..

CutieBear · 25/04/2021 14:48

YABU. The PM isn’t God. I can’t think of any MPs and advisers that I like. I have nicknames for many of them...

LubaLuca · 25/04/2021 14:53

There is another poor association with hole and in Ireland sometimes it can mean - anus.

I imagine Mary from The Royle Family whispering this to Barbara Grin

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 25/04/2021 14:56

LubaLuca :o

And Barbara looking bewildered.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 25/04/2021 14:57

Think you’re taking this too seriously, I mock Boris the buffoon all of the time.

Papergains · 25/04/2021 14:58

This relationship is over. Either that or you have terrible PMT.

Nancydrawn · 25/04/2021 15:04

It's pretty puerile. It's like calling when people call US political parties the Dumbocrats or the Repukelicans. Even if you agree with the larger political point they're making, it's just so pathetic of an insult that you kind of shy away from talking with them.

Creative swearing and amusing pointed critique is fine. And generic dismissal also a-okay. You want to call the president/PM/whatever "that dickhead," have at it. But unfunny people thinking they've made a clever, winning point when they haven't is...ick.

Barney60 · 25/04/2021 15:10

The prime minister cant hear your partner mocking him, i dont understand why your upset over it?
Have you ever watched parliament, the minsters mock each other all the time.
If you could hear what i used to call Jeremy Corbyn!

Fuckitsstillraining · 25/04/2021 15:23

Thats probably a good idea

Fuckitsstillraining · 25/04/2021 15:28

I absolutely hate this idea that by changing a name to something remotely rude is either clever or amusing. But I find the people who do this are usually pretty clueless about current affairs or politics. One person I know that was constantly doing the same as your partner and complaining about not getting enough benefits didn’t realise that benefit money came from taxes, they thought the government 'just had' lots of money!! I'd tell him how ignorant you find it and if he continues maybe try meet someone who is more like you.
