My partner insults and mocks the prime ministers name

I'm in Ireland and the prime ministers name is - Michael - in Irish its pronounced as - Mehaul - that is the pronunciation of his name.

Nearly every day when my partner has an issue with politics or there's something in the news or there is a new announcement from the government, my partner insults and mocks his name.

My partner calls him - Mehole.

I know what hole means - it's a hole for example - to dig a hole. It means a hollow deepness.

There is another poor association with hole and in Ireland sometimes it can mean - anus.

I hate it when my partner mocks and insults the prime ministers name and calls him - Mehole. The way he does it is long and drawn out too so its like - Mehooooole.

It's drives me nuts and I really hate it. I haven't told him yet and to be honest I'm not too sure if I will be telling him. I think it's shows much deeper that goes beyond what it is. I think it shows something like a fundamental difference.

I think mocking and insulting the man's name shows an ignorance and small mindedness towards politics. What is mocking his name going to achieve? Does it make him feel better mocking and insulting his name? Is mocking his name going to make covid go away?

I think my partner should be going into politics and government to see if he can do better.
I'm beginning to really dislike spending time with him now because I know there will be a mention of - Mehooooole and I would rather spend my free time off reading a book or enjoying myself. Not listening to my partner mock and insult another man's name.

Eh the whole country calls him that, well maybe not his mammy.

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 25/04/2021 18:35

A lot of people do this - celebrity/politician names are altered all the time. I personally absolutely hate it because my uncle used to do this with my name when I was little - he made it into an insult and I felt so belittled. However, it’s my issue -people always have and always will do this so there’s no point taking it seriously I guess.

I'm not surpised you hated it. Because that was the actions of a bully, esp as I am sure he KNEW you hated it.

Spot on @CovidSmart

@Nancydrawn

It's pretty puerile. It's like calling when people call US political parties the Dumbocrats or the Repukelicans. Even if you agree with the larger political point they're making, it's just so pathetic of an insult that you kind of shy away from talking with them.

Creative swearing and amusing pointed critique is fine. And generic dismissal also a-okay. You want to call the president/PM/whatever "that dickhead," have at it. But unfunny people thinking they've made a clever, winning point when they haven't is...ick.

Yes. It’s just not witty really.

I think though the absolute beauty of using me hole with MM is that you naturally think it every five minutes whilst he's speaking. It would be like if boris Johnson was boris smyth. Bj is childish but BS is what he talks.

MadeForThis · 25/04/2021 18:44

I've heard him called Me-hole many many times.

Your BF isn't being original. It's a fairly common insult towards that politician.

triceratopsmama · 25/04/2021 18:47

@Roszie

My grandad is Irish and called Michael. Pronounced Michael. I'm never heard any of his Irish relatives saying it how you're saying.
The op has misspelled his name. It's Micheal, the Irish for Michael hence the different pronunciation.
Mehoooole · 25/04/2021 18:49

I can't stop laughing at this thread.

triceratopsmama · 25/04/2021 18:50

And I misspelled it too🤣🤣 micheál🤦🏻‍♀️ and didn't read to see if anyone else had clarified before I did!

triceratopsmama · 25/04/2021 18:51

And also I have to admit we call him much worse things in this house. But mainly we refer to him as Mr Burns.

RedcurrantPuff · 25/04/2021 18:52

I laughed, sorry. It might annoy me if it was constant but otherwise no.

RedcurrantPuff · 25/04/2021 18:53

I also just learned that Micheal is an actual name and not just a mis spelling of Michael. This thread has been educational.

RedcurrantPuff · 25/04/2021 18:56

No one tell the OP what people used to call Jeremy Hunt

Apileofballyhoo · 25/04/2021 18:59

Drives me mad when DH goes on and on about politics, OP. I can see how hearing Mehole over and over and over again when you would prefer to be chilling out would be maddening. I banned DH felon watching the week in politics on a Sunday night when we first moved in together. He tends to not follow Irish politics as closely now, to avoid getting annoyed. Tell your DP to discuss politics with someone else, you know how bad things are already and can do without the details and raising your stress levels. Is there anything you do that annoys him?

Apileofballyhoo · 25/04/2021 18:59

DH is not a felon. From watching.

saraclara · 25/04/2021 19:01

Ugh. I don't care what the wordplay is about, but I hate these repetitive 'jokes'. By the third time, they're boring, and by the 30th I want to kill the person. It's like they want you to roar with laughter about how clever they are, every time. My mum does it and it drives me insane. She's probably on the 300th time of her 'clever wordplay' example.

I'd simply say "It was amusing the first time, but now you're being really tedious and boring. Calling him that stopped being funny months ago"

Don't mention that you think it's disrespectful. Just let him know that he's boring.

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/04/2021 19:05

Ah give over will ya.

Everyone calls him Me hole.

ViciousJackdaw · 25/04/2021 19:28

Bollocks, if I want to refer to Johnson in an offensive manner then I bloody well will. He has been most uncomplimentary about the area I was born in, as has Thatcher.

Having said that, I know I am capable of droning on about politics if allowed to so, on the whole (hole?), I try to keep it zipped and save my hatred to discuss with similar ranters.

newnortherner111 · 26/04/2021 18:55

Hate the person but respect the office, regardless of who occupies it and their respect (or not) for it. I think the OP is correct to not like how her partner refers to the Taoiseach.

I think indeed I am 100% certain that the current UK Prime Minister is the worst in history, indeed would support his hanging if I believed in the death penalty, but do not refer to him by some silly nickname or mispronounce his name.

CervixHaver · 26/04/2021 19:46

@DoingItMyself

Op is referring to Micheál Martin, not Michael D. Higgins My apologies to them both! And to Irish people in general. I'd like to say I'll stop commenting on things I know nothing about but sadly, it's been my lifetime's work.
😁 Me too!
